Reporters Without Borders (RSF) has released its annual World Press Freedom Index. According to the latest analysis, Ukraine has risen 18 positions to 61st place. Read more about the results of press freedom in the world in 2024
Ukraine has moved up 18 positions to 61st place out of 180 countries in the Reporters Without Borders' freedom of speech ranking. In 2023, the country was ranked 79th. This rating is published annually in the World Press Rankings. It is noted that Ukraine managed to improve its position due to the improvement of the security indicator (number of journalists killed) and the political situation.
Main results of the press freedom survey in 2024
Norway, Denmark, and Sweden are the traditional leaders. The Netherlands, Finland, Estonia, Portugal, and Ireland also took leading positions. Last year, Lithuania was also among them, but this year the country did not demonstrate decent indicators of freedom of speech.
The European countries Hungary, Malta and Greece have the lowest freedom of speech scores in the region. They ranked 67th, 73rd, and 88th in the ranking, respectively.

In 49 countries, the situation with freedom of speech was rated as “difficult”. This includes some European countries: Serbia, Albania, and Georgia (98th, 99th, and 103rd positions, respectively). In 2023, these countries were rated as “problematic,” and Georgia was even 2 positions ahead of Ukraine, ranking 77th.
The worst situation with freedom of speech is observed in North Korea, Afghanistan, Syria, and Eritrea. In Afghanistan, journalists have been subjected to constant harassment since the Taliban returned to power. And Syria and Eritrea have become lawless zones for the press, with the largest number of detained, missing or hostage journalists.
Ukraine has become one of the main “surprises” in this year's ranking, moving up 18 positions at once. Unfortunately, since the beginning of the Russian occupation, the rule of law has not been introduced in the country, and political interference in free Ukraine has declined. In 2023, Ukraine moved up to 79th place out of 106 positions.
