It was a matter of time: why are the power cuts in Ukraine happening again and are there any schedules?

Ukraine is once again experiencing a significant deficit in the power grid, which has led to several emergency blackouts in the country. But people are also urged to prepare for more power cuts. We'll tell you why the power sector has resorted to tough measures again.

It should be noted that while previously power outages affected only production facilities, now they also affect household consumers.

As Ukrenergo explained, Ukraine's power system has seen a sharp increase in electricity consumption, which is, in particular, due to the cold snap. The power system could not cope, so restrictions were introduced for the population.

According to the head of the company, Volodymyr Kudrytskyi, on Tuesday evening and until the end of the day, 10% of consumers in all regions were affected by the outages. The exception is critical infrastructure facilities.

"The problem is not that electricity cannot be supplied to any region, but that the combined capacity of power plants is not enough to cover consumption, and imports are not enough to cover the deficit. Each region bears the burden of blackouts in solidarity," he said.

It was only a matter of time before the blackouts came

It was "only a matter of time" before the population would have to go without electricity, and it eventually happened, says YASNO CEO Sergiy Kovalenko.

"There has been a complete dissonance in recent weeks. Despite the shelling, we had no idea how difficult the situation was. At the same time, we lost most of the shunting generation. But the power engineers were coming up with schemes 24/7 to ensure that we did not feel the latest enemy attacks. And they succeeded... But not today," he wrote on Facebook.

Kovalenko said that the deficit has not disappeared, imports have physical limitations, and the demand for electricity is growing significantly due to low temperatures. And while today it is low, in summer it is the opposite - due to the heat.

As a result of russian shelling, Ukraine lost 8 GW of capacity. Therefore, power engineers warn that the country will face a difficult period, especially in winter.

Are there any outage schedules?

On Tuesday evening, Ukraine was forced to introduce emergency restrictions from 21:00 to 24:00. By the morning, all regions felt the restrictions again. From 6:40 a.m. to 09:00 a.m., controlled emergency blackouts were introduced for industrial and residential consumers in all regions of Ukraine.

In the evening of 15 May, Ukraine also faced power cuts. Blackouts were observed in Kyiv, Mykolaiv, Odesa, Kyiv, Dnipro and Donetsk regions.

It should be noted that the blackout schedules that were introduced during previous blackouts are not in effect now, as this is an emergency situation.

"Please note that during emergency outages, the schedules posted on the website are not valid," DTEK explained to Kyiv residents.

Electricity consumption limits are usually imposed during peak hours - from 6:00 to 9:00 in the morning and from 18:00 to 23:00 in the evening.

We remind you! The second heating season in Ukraine since the start of the full-scale invasion has passed without massive power cuts and blackouts. How this became possible and why russia failed to destroy the Ukrainian energy system, we tell you here.
