European airline Lufthansa Group will now add a new environmental fee to ticket prices, which will significantly affect the cost of the flight. Learn more about the new prices and destinations from Lufthansa Group
In 2024, passengers will face unpleasant changes, as Lufthansa Group has announced the introduction of a new environmental fee. This will significantly affect the cost of tickets, so you can forget about low-cost flights in Europe with Lufthansa Group.
Lufthansa Group became one of the first European airlines to introduce such a fee. Perhaps other airlines will also support this environmental trend.
Earlier, we reported that in July 2024, civil aviation workers are expected to go on strike in Italy, Ireland and the UK.
New ticket prices and fee amount
The fee will range from 1 to 72 euros, and its amount depends on the destination. For example, for a flight from Frankfurt to Berlin, you only have to pay a euro. And from Frankfurt to New York - 9 euros. The new fee applies to all countries of the European Union, the United Kingdom, and Switzerland. The amount of the fee can be deciphered from the ticket price, it will be signed as Environmental Cost Surcharge.
The fee is intended to offset the costs of using sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and other innovations to comply with EU regulations on reducing emissions. This decision will come into force on January 1, 2025.

Reasons for the introduction of the new environmental fee
The Lufthansa Group is introducing the fee to cover the costs of complying with new environmental requirements. So far, 3 environmental programs have been developed. Their key goal is to switch to environmentally friendly aviation fuel and compensate for carbon dioxide emissions.
Previously, passengers could pay this fee voluntarily. To do so, they had to choose a “green fare” for the flight.
