The tourism industry has undergone significant changes during the war, but Lviv, as one of Ukraine's cultural centers, remains a popular destination for travelers.

The Lviv Tourist Office, together with the Ukrainian Catholic University, conducted a sociological survey among city visitors, which helped to create a detailed portrait of the modern tourist in Lviv.

Who is coming to Lviv in 2024?

This year, Lviv welcomes mostly Ukrainian tourists, who account for 85% of all visitors. The main sources of domestic tourists are large cities such as Kyiv, Ternopil, Kharkiv, and Khmelnytskyi. Foreigners, who account for 15% of visitors, mostly come from Poland, Germany, the UK, the Netherlands, and the US.

The main purpose of visiting the city for most visitors is leisure, as stated by 43.6% of respondents. Other important reasons include work (19.7%), visiting friends and relatives (15.4%), as well as transit (6.1%) and volunteering (4.7%). Among foreign visitors, the most popular reasons are also recreation (27.4%), work (25.3%), and volunteering (17.9%).

Favorite locations and events

Among the most popular places visited by tourists are the Opera House, Svobody Avenue, Rynok Square and the City Hall, Stryiskyi Park, and Lychakiv Cemetery. Guests of Lviv also noted an increase in satisfaction with the ease of movement around the city and the availability of tourist information.

How was the survey conducted?

The survey of Lviv visitors was conducted by face-to-face interviews, during which students of the Department of Sociology at the Ukrainian Catholic University interviewed 638 respondents aged 16 and older.

The sample was formed by random selection, which allowed us to obtain representative data on typical visitors to the city. However, elements of positive discrimination were added to the sample, which ensured sufficient representation of internally displaced persons and foreign visitors among the respondents.

The survey was conducted in the most visited places in Lviv that attract both locals and tourists. The main locations included:

• Rynok Square

• Memorial to the Heroes of the Heavenly Hundred

• Vernissage market

• Kryva Lypa Lane

• Square near the Lviv National Academic Opera and Ballet Theater named after S. Krushelnytska

• Modular town for internally displaced persons

• Hotels, cultural and entertainment facilities

This combination of locations ensured a diversity of respondents and allowed us to get a full picture of the different aspects of tourist flow in the city during the war.

Lviv continues to be an important tourist center even in difficult times. The city attracts tourists with its history, culture and hospitality, as well as its ability to adapt to new realities.
