For the first time in history, Ukraine has launched a unique service that allows you to get married online through the state portal Diia. This revolutionary approach has become a major step in the country's digital transformation and has greatly simplified the marriage registration process.

The service is especially useful for the military and for couples who are at a great distance from each other, as now they do not need to be physically present together to register a marriage.

How was the service launched?

The launch of the Online Marriage service was part of the Ukrainian government's large-scale efforts to digitalize public services. As part of this project, the Ministry of Digital Transformation, together with other authorities, has implemented a system that allows for the full process of marriage registration through the Diia mobile application.

According to Mykhailo Fedorov, Minister of Digital Transformation, this service allows not only to apply for marriage, but also to conduct the ceremony online via video, receive a digital marriage certificate, and even order a physical document via delivery.

How does online marriage in Diia work?

For those planning to use the service, it all starts with updating the Diia app to the latest version. The service allows you to make a proposal and formalize a marriage in a few simple steps that do not require a visit to the registry office.

The main steps of the process are as follows:

1. Online proposal: One of the partners makes a marriage proposal in the Diia app. A notification is sent to the other partner via the chosen messenger.
2. Acceptance of the proposal: The partner must respond to the proposal within 14 days. If the answer is yes, the registration process continues.
3. Filling in the data: After agreeing to the marriage, both partners provide their personal data for the application. They have 12 hours to do so after accepting the offer.
4. Choosing a date: The platform offers the nearest available dates for marriage registration, which are possible in as little as 5 days.
5. The marriage ceremony: On the day of the ceremony, the couple logs in to the link provided by Diia to join the video ceremony via the Webex platform. The ceremony lasts up to 30 minutes.
6. Receiving the certificate: After the ceremony, a digital certificate automatically appears in the Diia app within a day. A physical document can be ordered through Ukrposhta or picked up at a branch.

Who can use the service

The service is available to citizens of Ukraine who have reached the age of majority and have the necessary documents in the Diia app. Basic conditions for using the service:

- Both partners must be citizens of Ukraine and have an ID-card or passport in Diia.
- The partners must not be in another marriage, and if one of them is divorced, the information about it must be in the registry office.
- Both must have a verified tax number.

How to propose and get married online

The process of proposing and getting married online in Diia is quite simple and convenient. Here are the main steps:

1. Go to the Diia app and select the “Online Marriage” section in the services.
2. Make an offer: Select the “Make an offer” option and send it to your partner via the selected messenger.
3. Acceptance of the offer: The partner must accept the offer within 14 days.
4. Providing data: Both partners must provide their personal data to apply for marriage.
5. Ceremony: On the designated day, the couple joins an online ceremony that lasts up to 30 minutes.
6. Receiving the certificate: The digital marriage certificate appears in Diia within 24 hours after the ceremony.

Additional features

During the marriage process, the couple can choose what to do with their surnames after the marriage. There are three options: keep their surnames, take the surname of one of the partners, or create a double surname. If the couple changes their mind, they can cancel the marriage application at any stage.
