In the Netherlands, tensions are growing in the centres for Ukrainian refugees, in particular due to a catastrophic shortage of places, AD writes.

Problems not only with housing

Office buildings, hotels and nursing homes used as shelters are overcrowded across the country. Ukrainians complain about overcrowding, lack of privacy and conflicts between residents. Many suffer from long periods of living together in cramped rooms.

In addition, the war continues to cause stress, leading to serious mental problems, including symptoms of psychosis and even suicidal thoughts.

According to the newspaper, tensions are exacerbated by uncertainty and the lack of long-term prospects: Ukrainians have temporary protection status only until 2026 and do not know what will happen next.

The level of funding for refugees is falling

The situation is exacerbated by a decrease in government funding for Ukrainians, which has drawn criticism from municipalities.

In 2022, municipalities received 100 euros per refugee per day, but this amount will be reduced to 45 euros from 2025.

In addition, since 1 January, municipalities have been allowed to charge accommodation fees to Ukrainians who are employed. This has caused discontent among residents who previously received these services for free.

The municipalities, in turn, are asking the Dutch government to build temporary housing and are also calling for long-term funding planning.

If you have encountered migration problems in one of the European countries and intend to change your place of residence, we recommend that you contact qualified migration lawyers who can help you with documents and temporary protection.

We remind you! Ukrainians in the Netherlands can obtain a residence permit after the expiry of temporary protection, but they must meet a number of requirements.
