On the occasion of the third anniversary of russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Kyiv hosted the Support Ukraine Summit, which was attended by European leaders and other senior officials. Here's what made the event memorable.


Presidents came to Kyiv: Finland's Alexander Stubb, Latvia's Edgars Rinkēvičius, Lithuania's Gitanas Nausėda; and the prime ministers: Canada - Justin Trudeau, Denmark - Mette Frederiksen, Estonia - Kristen Michal, Iceland - Kristrun Frostadottir, Norway - Jonas Har Støre, Spain - Pedro Sanchez, Sweden - Ulf Kristersson; President of the European Council Antonio Costa, President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen, OSCE Secretary General Feridun Sinirlioglu and Minister for European Affairs of France Benjamin Haddad.


Ukraine was represented at the summit by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. He opened the event and made several important statements.


What did Zelenskyy say?


First of all, Volodymyr Zelenskyy stressed that Ukraine is ready to exchange all prisoners for all prisoners. russia continues to hold many Ukrainian military and civilians, and Ukraine wants to bring them all home.


The President also repeated his rhetoric that Ukraine will seek to build NATO domestically if the Alliance remains closed to Ukraine.


In terms of Ukraine's defence needs, Zelenskyy reiterated the need for air defence systems. He stressed that this is important because a new air shield is being created.

Statements by foreign leaders


European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said that the first priority is to increase Ukraine's resilience. The EU helped Kyiv to cover the budget gap.


She also stressed the need to provide Ukraine with weapons. According to her, autocrats around the world are closely watching what is happening in Ukraine, so the fate of our country is important to the whole world.


Ursula von der Leyen announced a €3 billion aid package. The European Commission has also prepared an ambitious energy security plan.


Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said that his country supports Ukraine's sovereignty. Spain wants a just peace for Ukraine. He announced a new aid package worth 1 billion euros.


British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, who joined the summit via video link, said that the United Kingdom would give Ukraine a £4.5 billion defence aid package and announced the largest sanctions package against Russia since the start of the full-scale Russian invasion. More than a hundred individuals and legal entities, as well as 40 shadow fleet vessels transporting Russian oil, were sanctioned.


Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre said that his country would provide €1 billion in humanitarian and civilian aid to Ukraine, as well as €300 million to support the energy sector. In addition, Norway plans to open a channel for investment in Ukrainian industry, which will receive €300 million. In total, Norway will allocate EUR 3.5 billion to support Ukraine this year.
