Despite the war, Ukraine remains open to foreign visitors. However, the country can only be accessed by land, so it is important to understand the conditions for crossing the Ukrainian border for foreigners in their own cars.

What documents are required to enter Ukraine?

It is worth noting that there are no restrictions on foreigners in connection with the introduction of martial law in Ukraine, except for citizens of the aggressor country. However, to enter Ukraine, you must have the following documents:

1. A valid passport (citizens of Turkey and Georgia can enter Ukraine on the basis of an ID card);

2. A visa (unless otherwise provided by law or a visa-free regime is established with the country);

3. Confirmation of the purpose of the trip (a document confirming family ties, an invitation from a citizen of Ukraine, an invitation to participate in conferences or other events, a booked tour, hotel reservation, etc;)

4. Confirmation of availability of sufficient fundsfor the entire period of stay in Ukraine and for returning to the country of origin (for a comfortable stay in Ukraine, on average, you need to have $45 per day per person);

5. An insurance policy issued by an insurance company registered in Ukraine or a foreign insurance company that has a representative office in Ukraine or contractual relations (assistance).

Do I need a Green Card to enter Ukraine?

A Green Card is an international policy of civil liability for drivers. It is required for every driver who travels around the world in their own car. This policy will allow you to reimburse the costs of treatment or repair of the victim's car in the event of an accident.

The insurance document is also required to pass customs control in countries that participate in the Green Card system. And Ukraine is one of the participants in this system, so the policy is required to enter this country.

How long can a car with foreign licence plates stay in Ukraine?

It is worth noting that foreigners who arrive in Ukraine must comply with the migration regulations. That is, the period of stay in Ukraine for foreign citizens and stateless persons is determined by the validity of the visa or the rules provided for by the visa-free regime (no more than 90 days within 180 days). In order to extend the period of stay in Ukraine, it is necessary to apply in advance to the state authorities (territorial bodies or subdivisions of the State Migration Service of Ukraine).

At the same time, according to Ukrainian law, foreign citizens can drive cars with foreign licence plates in Ukraine for up to one year. However, if you plan to stay in Ukraine for longer than two months, you need to contact a service centre of the Ministry of Internal Affairs for temporary registration of the car. After the one-year period expires, the car with foreign number plates must leave Ukraine.

In addition, the Green Card is usually issued for a period of 15 days to one year.
