Buying a car in Poland is a popular choice among both Poles and foreigners living in the country. However, after signing the purchase agreement, the new owner receives not only the keys to the vehicle but also a number of legal obligations.

The law requires the car to be registered with the appropriate authority promptly, and in some cases, a tax return must also be filed and tax paid. Failure to meet the established deadlines may result in fines and additional financial costs.

We explain where to go after buying a car in Poland, when the obligation to pay tax arises, and what penalties are imposed for violating the rules.

What do you need to do after buying a car in Poland?

After purchasing a car, the new owner must complete the official formalities related to vehicle registration. This requirement applies regardless of where the car was purchased—from a private individual, a dealership, a used car lot, or a company.

First and foremost, you must contact the Department of Motor Vehicles (Wydział Komunikacji) in your place of residence and submit an application to register the car. This agency is responsible for updating the vehicle’s registration information and registering the new owner.

The following deadlines apply to most buyers:

- Individuals must register the vehicle within 30 days of signing the contract;

- Companies engaged in the trade of vehicles have 90 days to do so.

It is not advisable to delay registration. Even if the vehicle already has Polish license plates and valid documents, the law requires the new owner to report the change of ownership and register the vehicle within the prescribed time limits. The time limit for completing these formalities begins on the date the purchase agreement is signed.

When is PCC tax due?

Not every car purchase in Poland involves paying an additional tax. The obligation arises only when the vehicle is purchased from a private individual under a purchase agreement.

In such a situation, the buyer must submit a PCC-3 declaration to the tax office and pay the tax on civil law transactions (Podatek od czynności cywilnoprawnych). The tax rate is 2% of the car’s value specified in the contract.

It is important to keep the deadlines in mind:

- The PCC-3 form must be filed within 14 days;

- The tax must also be paid within 14 days of the date the sales contract is signed.

If the vehicle is purchased at a dealership, a used car lot, or directly from the manufacturer, the PCC tax is usually not charged. In such cases, the buyer only needs to complete the vehicle registration process without additional tax formalities.

What penalties apply for missing deadlines?

Polish law provides for financial liability for failure to fulfill obligations in a timely manner after purchasing a car. Most often, fines are imposed for late vehicle registration or failure to meet tax obligations.

The following penalties apply for violating registration deadlines:

- For individuals – a fine of 500 zlotys;

- For car dealers – a fine of 1,000 PLN.

If the vehicle is not registered within 180 days of purchase, the fine is doubled. Therefore, delaying the paperwork can lead to additional costs that are easily avoided by adhering to the established deadlines.

Separate liability is also provided for failure to pay the PCC tax. If the buyer fails to file the PCC-3 declaration or pay the tax within the established 14-day period, the tax authority may impose a penalty and apply additional tax sanctions.

Therefore, after purchasing a car in Poland, it is important not only to check the vehicle’s technical condition but also to complete all formalities in a timely manner. Registering the car and, if necessary, paying the tax will help avoid fines and ensure trouble-free use of the vehicle in the future.

What should Ukrainians keep in mind before buying a car in Poland?

When buying a car in Poland, it is important to immediately check exactly which formalities need to be completed after signing the contract. Most problems arise not from the purchase itself, but from missed deadlines for registration or submitting documents to the tax office. Therefore, it is worth preparing in advance for all mandatory procedures.

A short checklist for the new owner:

- Keep the sales contract and other documents for the car;

- Submit an application for vehicle registration to the Wydział Komunikacji;

- Do not miss the 30-day registration deadline if you are an individual;

- Check whether you need to pay PCC tax;

- If the car was purchased from a private individual, submit the PCC-3 declaration within 14 days;

- Complete all formalities on time to avoid fines and additional costs.

Following these simple rules will help you quickly register the car under the new owner’s name and use the vehicle in Poland without any unnecessary problems.
