Taking the Bus to Poland: Is It Worth Crossing the Border, and How Can You Avoid Getting Stuck in a 10-Hour Line?
Taking the bus to Poland can be a cheap and convenient option, but lines at the border often last for hours. Find out when it’s worth choosing this route, what risks to consider, and what alternatives are available
Bus travel from Ukraine to Poland remains one of the most popular ways to reach the EU, especially ahead of the vacation season. It is cheaper than taking the train, offers a wider range of routes, and tickets are often available even on the day of departure. At the same time, crossing the Ukrainian-Polish border by bus can be a serious challenge due to hours-long lines. UNIAN.Tourism writes about its own experience with such a trip.

Bus to Poland: Pros and Cons
After the closure of Ukrainian airspace, many travelers reach airports in neighboring countries via ground transportation. Poland remains one of the main destinations, as it offers convenient flights to many resorts across Europe and the world.
The bus offers several advantages. First, there are significantly more routes than train services. While trains from Ukraine to Poland mainly run to Przemyśl, and the direct Kyiv–Warsaw train has limited seating, the bus can take you not only to Warsaw but also to other cities in Poland and EU countries.
Second, bus tickets are often cheaper. While a train ticket from Kyiv to Warsaw can cost an average of 3,200–5,200 UAH, bus tickets start at around 1,000 UAH. For those traveling on short notice or who missed out on buying a train ticket, this is often the only affordable option.
The main risk—border queues
The biggest problem with bus travel to Poland is the unpredictable time it takes to cross the border. According to experienced travelers, the length of the queues depends on the day of the week, the time of day, the season, the border crossing point, and the overall situation on the route.
Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays are generally considered the least busy, and lines are often shorter at night. However, these rules don’t always apply to passenger buses. Unlike a private transfer or your own car, a bus is bound by the carrier’s schedule, route, and operations.
During the vacation season, before holidays, or on weekends, delays can reach up to 10 hours. This is particularly critical for those heading to the airport with a connecting flight. If the bus is scheduled to arrive in Warsaw in the morning, the actual arrival may be pushed back to the evening.

What complicates border crossing?
In addition to the usual lines, border crossing times are also affected by additional factors. For example, shift changes for Polish border guards can take 30 to 60 minutes. During this time, bus inspections are paused, but new buses continue to arrive.
Also, following the introduction of new EU entry rules, inspections may take longer. Passengers must exit the bus with their belongings, pass through security scanners, and undergo biometric checks—including photos and fingerprints.

Once you enter the control zone, access to cafes, shops, or proper restrooms may be restricted. Therefore, it’s advisable to bring water, a snack, and everything you need for a long wait. At the same time, it’s important to remember the rules for bringing food into Poland.
According to travelers’ experience, the return trip from Poland to Ukraine usually goes much faster. Border control may take about an hour or two, and you often don’t need to unload your belongings from the bus.
Under the new EU entry rules, passengers still have to get off the bus for biometric checks, but the procedure for leaving Poland is usually less tedious. For example, a bus trip from Warsaw to Kyiv in February 2026 took about 14 hours, of which approximately 2.5 hours were spent crossing the border.
What other options are there for a quick entry into the EU?
If your main goal is to reach an international airport, it’s not always worth focusing specifically on Poland. UNIAN.Tourism notes that bus routes to Romania or Moldova often cross the border faster.
For example, the Chernivtsi–Suceava bus can cross the border in an hour and a half, and the entire trip takes about three hours. This is one of the fastest and cheapest options for leaving Ukraine by bus—tickets start at around 400 UAH.
Another option is the Kyiv–Chisinau Airport bus. On average, the trip takes 11–12 hours, and delays at the border are usually shorter. By comparison, the Kyiv–Chisinau train takes over 17 hours and is often more expensive.

Is it worth taking a bus to Poland?
A bus to Poland can be a cost-effective and convenient option if you aren’t tied to a specific arrival time. But if you have a flight, an important meeting, or a connection scheduled after the bus ride, the risks are too high.
For a bus trip to Poland, you should allow plenty of time, avoid scheduling important matters on the day of arrival, and be prepared for a long wait at the border. In contrast, a bus trip from Poland to Ukraine is usually easier and can be a perfectly acceptable option.
We remind you! The Polish Border Guard has the right to check that everyone crossing the border has sufficient funds. Financial requirements vary depending on citizenship and the planned length of stay. Read more about the minimum amounts required to enter Poland in 2026.
