The coronavirus pandemic and full-scale war contributed to tens of thousands of Ukrainians working and studying remotely. Without the Internet and mobile communication due to constant power outages, it is extremely difficult to do this. Understanding the situation in the country, ISPs find ways to ensure communication.

Which providers work without electricity?

The list of providers that work during the blackout:

• ADSL (Ukrtelecom);

• satellite internet (Datagroup);

• Starlink.

Currently, more and more providers are trying to create uninterrupted Internet service. We recommend that you check with your provider if they guarantee connection when your home is out of power.

How can providers work without light, or what is fiber optic internet?

Fiber optic or optical Internet can work even when there is no light. This technology transmits data via optical fiber communication lines, PON (passive optical network). The necessary equipment of the provider and the user is located in the same place, so a blackout in neighboring houses does not affect communication.

When connecting to the optical Internet, the provider will provide a special terminal that is connected to a computer or router. Since the equipment is powered by sockets, it is necessary to provide power sources, for example, a generator.

Reasons for poor communication during blackouts

When the lights are turned off, Wi-Fi routers stop working and Ukrainians switch to mobile networks. Often, the Internet and communication are turned off for several reasons:

• Network overload due to increased traffic;

• Discharging reserve batteries at base stations.

How to provide communication and Internet at home yourself?

In order to be online during a blackout and not stress, you should do the following in advance:

• Purchase an external antenna and a mobile 4G router. These devices will allow you to use the mobile Internet without losing speed;

• If your provider provides Internet using xPON technology or your apartment has an optical cable, install an uninterruptible power supply unit for the optical receiver and router;

• Buy a power bank, the power of which will allow you to charge all your gadgets.

It should be noted that there are providers who, with the help of their subscribers, can provide uninterrupted Internet. For example, if you have one or more 12 V 7-18 Ah AGM (Absorbent Glass Mat), LiFePo4 (Lithium Iron Phosphate), Li-Ion (Lithium Ion) or Li-Po (Lithium -polymer) with a balancer, and you can provide them for temporary use, then you will help not only yourself, but also your neighbors with power backup of Internet equipment.

The company will connect them to switches, and the equipment will be able to work in the absence of light for up to 4 hours. Check with your ISP for these options.
