Refugees from Ukraine who plan to stay in Poland for a long time are advised to take care of replacing their Ukrainian driver's license with a European-style Polish license in advance.

Where can I go to replace my driver's license?

To replace a Ukrainian ID card with a European one, you need to contact the district administration or the office of the mayor's office. The communication department of the city administration (Wydział Komunikacji Urzędu miasta) or the Starostwo Powiatowe deals with issues of replacement of driver's licenses.

What documents must be prepared to replace a driver's license?

• An original and a copy of a passport or another document that can confirm a residence permit in Poland.

• IDPs must provide a stamped passport and PESEL. Learn more about who can lose PESEL status and for what reason, as well as how to restore it here.

• Copy of Ukrainian driver's license;

• The original and a copy of the translation of the driver's license, which was prepared by a sworn translator;

• Photo size 35x45. One of the requirements for a photo card: the photo must be relatively new, no older than 6 months;

• A completed application, a template for which will be provided to you directly in the department;

• Check for the payment of the driver's license fee in the amount of PLN 100.50.

It is also noted that in addition, it is necessary to confirm consent to the processing of personal data and fill out an application for data verification, as well as pay a customs duty and registration fee.

Keep in mind that after submitting an application for a replacement driver's license, a request will be sent to the Ukrainian consulate for verification purposes. This is a necessary condition for confirming the validity of a Ukrainian driver's license. This service is paid additionally and costs PLN 125.

How long does it take to replace a driver's license?

Usually, the procedure of replacing a Ukrainian driver's license with a European-style license takes about 1-2 months.

During this time, you need to carry the certificate with you, which will be given to you when you apply for a replacement certificate. Your Ukrainian driver's license will be sent to Ukraine. It is noted that after returning to your homeland, you will be able to issue a so-called exchange and take the document back.

We will remind you! According to the Special Law on Assistance to Ukrainian Citizens in Poland, obtaining a PESEL UKR number is currently not mandatory.
