In Ukraine, there are fines for drivers who do not comply with the rules for operating cars with foreign license plates. Here's how to avoid trouble and what you need to know when driving a car with foreign license plates into Ukraine.

Please note! The rules for entering Ukraine with cars with foreign license plates differ for Ukrainians and foreigners.

Rules for entering Ukraine by car with foreign license plates for foreigners

Citizens of other countries can import cars with foreign registration into the territory of Ukraine exclusively for their own use.

Important! Foreign citizens can drive cars with foreign license plates in Ukraine for up to one year. However, if you plan to stay in Ukraine for more than two months, you need to contact a service center of the Ministry of Internal Affairs for temporary registration of the car. After the one-year period expires, the car with foreign license plates must leave Ukraine.

The same rules apply to those Ukrainian citizens who are registered with the consulate abroad and reside there permanently.

Ukrainians have the right to import a car with foreign license plates for their own use after a written declaration and payment of customs duties. These rules apply to foreign citizens who have a residence permit in Ukraine.

Citizens of Ukraine who are temporarily registered with consulates in other countries have the right to import a car with foreign license plates for their own use upon written declaration, but without paying customs duties. However, the period of stay of such a car on the territory of Ukraine should not exceed 60 days within one calendar year (continuously or with interruptions).

Please note that in both cases, if a car with foreign license plates is imported by a citizen of Ukraine for more than 30 days, you need to contact the service center of the Ministry of Internal Affairs for temporary registration.

In order to cross the border in a car with foreign registration, the following documents are required:
