The hardest winter in the history of independent Ukraine is over. russia tried to plunge Ukrainians into darkness, cold and the Middle Ages, but thanks to our unity, dedicated work and professionalism of power engineers, the enemy's plans were not realized.

How did Ukrainians survive the winter? Let's find out and remember together.

How many massive rocket attacks were there?

Since October 2022, the occupying army has carried out 15 massive missile attacks and 18 drone attacks on Ukrainian energy facilities. In total, more than 1,200 missiles and drones were launched, of which 250 units hit the target.

At present, 43% of main network facilities in Ukraine have been damaged. Thermal energy suffered the most losses. Almost every TPP of our country was under attack, all large thermal power plants of the country were damaged. Ukrenergo said that there are objects in the network that have been visited six times, and some up to twenty. There is also a lot of destruction at hydroelectric power stations. According to estimates by the World Bank and the United Nations Development Program, Ukraine needs about $1 billion for recovery. So far, Ukrenergo has already attracted $700 million for the reconstruction of the power system.

What helped restore Ukraine's energy industry?

Ukrainians were able to survive this terrible winter thanks to the dedicated work of energy workers. About 1,500 repairmen are working to restore reliable power 24/7. During the periods of rocket attacks, the energy industry quickly repaired destroyed substations, quite often even risking their own lives. It was the professionalism of the specialists and the minimum deadlines for the work that made it possible to stabilize the system.

Also, the increase in the level of sky protection, thanks to new anti-aircraft systems, made it possible to significantly reduce the number of enemy flights.

In mid-February, scheduled repair work was completed and two power units at the Rivne NPP were put into operation. As a result, the power in the system increased and, as a result, the deficit decreased, which made it possible to avoid power outages. In this way, Ukraine compensated for the lack of capacity that arose due to the occupation of the Zaporizhzhia NPP.

Nature is on Ukraine's side

Not the last role was played by favorable weather conditions. The winter was quite warm, there were very few truly frosty days. Also, the early and abnormally high flood on the rivers made it possible to increase the volume of electricity production at hydroelectric power stations. Such anomalies occur once every 20-30 years.

Now, the increase in the world's sun is contributing to more energy production in solar power plants. Also, in connection with the gradual warming, the consumption of electricity decreases.

Endurance of Ukrainians

Ukrainians went through the trials of this winter quite heroically as well. Most people were prepared, had alternative energy sources, the necessary means for quick cooking, etc. Business continued to work, supported the economy, and people tried to support each other.

Plans for the future

In addition to taking stock, Ukrenergo is actively working on the future: calculating losses, filing lawsuits in European courts, planning new defense strategies and preparing for the coming winter. The company began to study the experience of other countries and is working on moving the maximum number of energy facilities underground so that they are beyond the reach of russian missiles.
