All drivers have heard of the Green Card insurance policy, but not everyone knows what it is and why they need it. We have prepared answers to the most common questions about this type of insurance.

European Health Insurance Card. Read here how to get preferential medical care in the EU countries.

Why do I need a Green Card policy?

This insurance policy is an analogue of a motor third party liability policy that covers the driver's liability in the event of an accident abroad. The Green Card is part of the international insurance system, so the driver is obliged to take out a policy to travel to the member states of the agreement. It is worth noting that the EU countries bordering Ukraine are members of the Green Card agreement. In total, the Green Card is required in 45 countries (see the list on the MTIBU website).

Note that you do not need to buy several policies to travel to different countries that are members of the insurance system.

What does the Green Card cover?

First of all, it should be noted that the payment of compensation is governed by the laws of the country where the accident occurred.

The Green Card provides coverage for damage caused to third parties in an accident. In other words, the insurance company will pay for car repairs or treatment of the victims.

In addition, a valid insurance policy protects the driver from fines. In many EU countries, driving a vehicle with or without expired insurance is considered an offence.

Important! The Green Card only compensates losses to a third party. The driver of the car that caused the accident will not receive compensation. For this purpose, you need to have another type of insurance policy - CASCO with the territory of the EU.

Where and how to buy a Green Card?

It takes a few minutes to apply for an insurance policy. All you need to do is follow the link, provide the necessary data and pay for the service.

Remember that it is impossible to buy an insurance policy "today". Take out insurance in advance - at least one day in advance.

You can also buy a Green Card at the border, but this procedure will take some time. We recommend taking out insurance online and printing out the insurance policy, as this is required by law.

What documents do I need to take out a policy?

The insurance procedure will be quick if you have the following documents:

  • Passport of a citizen of Ukraine;
  • international passport;
  • car registration certificate.

Can I buy a policy abroad?

Staying abroad does not prevent you from taking out a policy. If the validity of the document has expired, simply apply for a new one online. The driver will receive a new policy by email and will be able to print it out.

How do I check my policy?

You can read information about your policy in the MTIBU database. To do this, go to the website and enter the following data: policy number and the date on which you are checking the policy.

The police will validate the insurance policy using the QR code indicated on the document.

What is the price of the Green Card?

The cost of insurance is regulated by the MTIBU, so companies indicate a fixed tariff and cannot change it. The price of the contract depends on the following parameters:

  • Type of vehicle (car, motorcycle, truck, trailer);
  • length of stay abroad.

As of May 2023, the cost of a 15-day policy to European countries is UAH 982. Calculate the cost of the policy upon your request here.

Just to remind you. Fines for drivers abroad amount to thousands of dollars. However, there are countries where the amount can reach tens of thousands of dollars. Find out which countries are in the ranking of countries with the highest fines in our article here.
