The Government of Canada has announced a new program to support refugees from Ukraine, which will be launched in October 2023. The announced program is designed for those who wish to stay in Canada with their families and will facilitate the obtaining of permanent residence. Who can apply for the program and under what conditions Canada will grant an immigration permit - further in the article.

CUAET Migration Program: the application period for the simplified procedure is over

As we reported earlier, in 2023, Canada extended the CUAET migration program, which provided for a simplified procedure for arrival and obtaining a work permit for Ukrainians who were forced to leave due to the war and allowed them to stay in the country as temporary residents for up to 3 years. However, visa applications ended on July 15. Therefore, those who did not have time to apply are now eligible for a visa and temporary protection in Canada only under standard immigration rules, which include payment of fees. However, those who have already received a CUAET visa are eligible to both enter the country (until March 31, 2024) and apply for an extended stay in Canada (up to 3 years), provided they have a work or study permit.

At the same time, the government announced a new program aimed at immigration of those who want to obtain permanent residence and have relatives in Canada.

Who can obtain permanent residence in Canada under the new program?

Starting from October 23, 2023, Ukrainians who have temporary resident status and one (or more) relatives in Canada will be able to obtain permanent residence. It should be noted that family members must be Canadian citizens or permanent residents. In particular, we are talking about: close relatives (parents, grandparents, brothers and sisters, children and grandchildren, as well as spouses).

How to apply for the new program to support Ukrainians in Canada?

The detailed terms and conditions of the application will be announced before the program is launched. However, today it is already known that applications from families will be accepted until October 22, 2024, and participation in the program will be free of charge for Ukrainians.
