Railway ticket scam: how not to fall for popular fraud schemes
The peak summer transportation season is always accompanied by an increased demand for railway tickets, which creates ideal conditions for fraudsters. They specialize in a variety of frauds aimed at making illegal profits. Here's a look at popular fraud schemes and how not to get caught
In a world of rapid technological development and growing mobility, rail transport remains one of the key means of transportation for millions of people around the world. In particular, in Ukraine, the popularity of e-tickets has increased significantly, allowing you to conveniently and quickly purchase a travel document without queues and unnecessary efforts.
However, as the popularity of e-tickets grows, new challenges arise related to possible abuse and fraud. Ukrzaliznytsia told us about common ticket fraud schemes and how not to fall for them.
Popular schemes of fraud with train tickets: how to avoid trouble
One of the fraudsters buys tickets in advance as soon as the sale opens. He orders tickets under fictitious or his own names and sells them to passengers. But because the name on the ticket does not match the name in the passport, these passengers cannot travel. The fraudsters promise them a smooth ride, but in fact refuse to let them board, leaving them without tickets and money.
Another tactic is that fraudsters buy tickets in advance, issuing them in fictitious names. When they receive the order, the scammers change the names on the tickets to the real names of the passengers. The electronic format of the tickets makes them invisible to ordinary passengers, but our conductors instantly recognize such fraud by comparing the data with passenger documents.
The trick is that fraudsters try to buy more tickets using bots, scripts, and automated methods to gain an advantage over regular passengers. In an effort to prevent these actions, UZ constantly blocks fraudsters' accounts and implements measures to avoid their influence on the sales process.
"Resellers" closely monitor the process of ticket refunds by other passengers and try to use it to their advantage. This is especially true for tickets for trains to Warsaw. According to the rules, tickets for these flights are returned to free sale 2 days before departure from 08:00. These tickets become available to everyone, and passengers do not have to overpay "unfortunate entrepreneurs" for their purchase.
This type of scheme has its own special risks and negative impact on all passengers. Criminals who engage in "resale" specifically wait for the moment when tickets are returned by a free quota and immediately try to buy them back using speed and automated tools.
