The Day of Remembrance of the Defenders of Ukraine: the history of this day and its significance for every Ukrainian

Every year, on August 29, the hearts of Ukrainians are filled with pride, respect and deep gratitude to those who sacrifice their lives to protect our homeland from external aggression. On this day, we come together to honor the memory of those who stand at the forefront of defense, ensuring that we can live in the face of russia's full-scale military aggression.
History of the holiday
On August 24, 2019, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy signed a decree establishing a memorial day. The date is timed to coincide with the day of the Ukrainian army's greatest losses in Donbas - the day of the breakthrough from the encirclement in Ilovaisk on August 29, 2014.
In 2019, the Minister of Defense of Ukraine signed an order according to which all senior officers of the Ministry of Defense and the Armed Forces of Ukraine will commemorate this day in the Hall of Memory.
The symbol of this day is the sunflower.

Importance of the Day of Remembrance of the Defenders of Ukraine
The events of recent years have shown that even in peacetime, when the whole of Europe has forgotten what war is on its territory, Ukraine remains at the forefront of the struggle for its independence and freedom. Since the beginning of russia's full-scale aggression, our soldiers have proved that even in an unequal struggle, you can move mountains if you believe in the justice of your goal.
We would like to express our deep gratitude to all the defenders of Ukraine - soldiers, officers, volunteers, members of national volunteer units and all those who are on the front line. Your courage and determination make our country strong, and you are real heroes.
Most of us cannot even imagine what it is like to face danger every day, to be ready to sacrifice ourselves at any moment to preserve peace and freedom. Your constant vigilance and willingness to fight for our future deserve the highest respect and admiration.
Ukraine remembers and mourns those who have fallen for its freedom - those who gave their lives defending their homeland. Their heroism will forever remain in the hearts of the Ukrainian people. Ukrainians owe it to the Heroes that they can walk the streets freely, work, study and build their future.
On this Day of Remembrance of the Defenders of Ukraine, we should not only mourn the losses but also celebrate the living heroes. May gratitude and support always be with them. These people are a true shield of the country's independence and sovereignty.
The memory of you and your feat will live forever. Glory to the heroes! Glory to Ukraine!
May future generations never forget your selfless devotion and willingness to serve our country. Your merits will be an inspiration for the children of Ukraine, and may they inherit your strength of spirit and desire to fight for freedom at any cost. Ukraine is obliged to preserve and pass on the history of the heroic resistance of its citizens so that we never forget how important it is to be true defenders of the Motherland.
