According to Republican Kevin McCarthy, the U.S. House of Representatives will launch a formal investigation into the impeachment of President Joe Biden on the grounds of abuse of power, obstruction, and corruption.

It is worth noting that Republicans have been conducting an informal investigation since January 2023, when they gained control of the House of Representatives. However, the hearings did not reveal any evidence of misconduct by the current US president. At the same time, the investigations highlighted the business dealings of the president's son, Hunter Biden, who, in their opinion, is conducting questionable activities behind his father's back.

A federal investigation is currently underway into possible tax crimes in connection with Hunter's foreign business transactions.

How have the White House and Biden reacted to the impeachment allegations?

The White House condemned the Republican decision.

"House Republicans have been investigating the president for nine months, and they have found no evidence of wrongdoing. Political extremes at their worst," White House spokesman Ian Sams wrote on social media.

Joe Biden himself noted that, in his opinion, the Republicans are trying to temporarily suspend the government.

"I don't know exactly why, but they just knew they wanted to impeach me. At this point, I can say they want to impeach me because they want to shut down the government," he said.

In addition, Biden added that he is not focused on the impeachment procedure because he has a job to do.

What is Biden accused of and how does it relate to Ukraine?

Gunther's business activities are closely connected to Ukraine, as back in 2014, Biden Jr. was appointed to the board of directors of Mykola Zlochevsky's Ukrainian mining company Burisma. In addition, in 2019, one of the most high-profile events was the dismissal of Ukrainian Prosecutor General Viktor Shokin, who allegedly tried to investigate Gunther's corruption activities. Therefore, this is where the investigation of corruption schemes is focused and where Republicans have been looking for evidence for 9 months.

Simply put, representatives of the U.S. House of Representatives are trying to prove that Joe Biden helped Hunter Biden with doing business abroad, using his position, opportunities and influence, and at the same time obstructed the investigation in every way possible.

What consequences could the Biden impeachment investigation have?

At present, there is no real evidence of crimes committed by Joe Biden, they have not been found for 9 months and it is not clear what they will try to find during the official investigation. In general, the announcement of the case gives Republicans more power, as the official request allows them to obtain the necessary documents through the court or summon additional witnesses (who have not yet been interviewed during these 9 months).

At the same time, despite the official announcement of the investigation, McCarthy began to contradict himself. After all, he had recently stated that such a step would require a vote among the members of the House of Representatives, and now he decided to bypass this step. Why? Because despite the fact that Republicans outnumber Democrats in the House, the required number of votes may simply not be available. In addition, support for Biden's impeachment could affect their future careers, including their re-election in 2024.

However, despite the lack of evidence, all of these statements will obviously have a negative impact on the election campaign of the current US president and may also affect financial support for Ukraine. After all, the main reason for the investigation is the alleged "corruption schemes of Biden Jr. in Ukraine", and therefore, the Congress may freeze aid to the country, justifying it by the fact that financing Kyiv is unacceptable, because it "covers the illegal activities of Hunter Biden".

We remind you! Joe Biden is currently leading the pack among the candidates for the US presidency in 2024, but the situation can change at any time. Read more about the position of voters on Ukraine and who is against supporting the country in our previous article.
