One of the British airports canceled or diverted about fifty flights because of an outbreak of coronavirus among the staff. We tell you how serious it is.

London's second busiest airport Gatwick, as reported by schengenvisainfo.com, decided to reduce the number of flights to 800 per day due to an outbreak of the disease in air traffic control.

At the same time, the Independent writes that the staff illness has caused the flow rate of flights using the busiest runway in the world to be reduced. Fifty flights to and from Sussex Airport have been canceled or diverted, and many other flights have been delayed for up to seven hours.

Around 8,000 passengers faced difficulties as a result of the restrictions.

Eight flights were also suspended between Gatwick and Belfast: six to and from the Northern Ireland capital's international airport, as well as two flights to Belfast City.

How long will the restrictions last?

The National Air Traffic Service (NATS) told us that the limit on departures and arrivals was in place until Sunday, October 1. At that time, the most cancellations were expected to be on Sept. 29 - affecting 33 departures.

"Given the level of illness we have experienced over the past few weeks, we believe that limiting the number of flights this week is responsible to reduce the risk of daily disruptions for passengers using the airport," NATS said.

It explained that due to the incidence of staff sickness, including COVID infection, the service is unable to cope with the normal flows at the airport.

What is the situation with COVID in Europe?

As you know, in May 2023, the World Health Organization stripped the coronavirus of its pandemic status. However, the WHO decision does not mean that COVID-19 is no longer a threat. It is only evidence that vaccination of the world's population has yielded results and thanks to this it was possible to reduce the number of hospitalizations and deaths due to the disease.

The fact that the coronavirus is still a threat is evidenced by the situation in the European Union.

A new strain of Pyrola, which replaced the well-known Omicron, is now actively spreading in the EU. Cases of infection with Pirola have been confirmed in Denmark, France, USA, UK, Sweden, Israel, Spain, Portugal and Germany.

According to experts, it is quite contagious and already has more than 30 mutations. "Pirola could easily become prevalent in Europe.

As for the statistics of infections in Britain, from September 10 to September 16, 2023, 10,195 cases were registered in the country.

Taking into account the situation with the not yet significant, but very noticeable surge of COVID infections in the EU, we advise tourists to protect themselves and take out an insurance policy, which will help you in case of unpredictable situations. You can purchase insurance at the link.
