Germany is introducing new controls on its borders with Poland and the Czech Republic. In this way, the country plans to combat the problem of illegal migration, Reuters reports.

New border control in Germany: what is known

German Interior Minister Nancy Feser announced the introduction of new border controls on the borders with Poland and the Czech Republic.

"If we fail to better protect our external borders, then open borders within the EU will be at risk," Feather emphasized.

According to official figures, the number of first asylum applications in Germany increased by 78% in the first seven months of 2023.

The police also reported an increase in the number of illegal border crossings with Germany in August, with 14,701 recorded, which is 66% more than in the same period last year.

The minister noted that new measures will be aimed at countering smugglers who facilitated the crossing of a quarter of migrants entering Germany.

The measures will be implemented in cooperation with Poland and the Czech Republic. Czech police have already stepped up checks on the border with Slovakia and on highways leading to Germany.

In addition, Poland is also introducing tighter controls on its border with Slovakia. This decision was made on behalf of the Minister of the Interior of Poland Mateusz Morawiecki on September 26.

On the Polish-Slovak border, strict checks will be carried out on cars and buses used by migrants who are not allowed to enter Poland.

Recently, border guards have recorded an increased number of people trying to get to Germany through Poland, using the so-called "Balkan route".

Excessive migration in Germany

The issue of migration is of great importance in the German political landscape, especially in the run-up to a series of regional elections in which far-right parties hope to strengthen their influence, starting with the elections in Bavaria and Hesse on October 8.

In particular, municipalities have called for increased funding to effectively address the situation. They point to an overstretched system of accommodation and service provision, reminiscent of the situation in 2015, when Germany hosted more than 1 million refugees seeking asylum from conflicts in the Middle East.

For example, in addition to the increase in the number of illegal border crossings, Germany has also hosted about 1 million Ukrainian refugees over the past year. It is important to note that these individuals are not counted in asylum application statistics, as they are automatically granted refugee status upon submission of their application.
