A large number of countries and individual cities in Europe have been collecting tourist tax from vacationers for several years, but in 2024 the list will increase. As schengenvisainfo.com explains, this is due to the need to support the industry after the Covid-19 pandemic. In addition, in this way, countries are trying to combat excessive tourism.

In which cities the tax will be introduced for the first time, and where the amounts will increase compared to the current year, we will tell you further in the article.

10 tourist destinations where you will have to pay a new tax in 2024

The Netherlands, Amsterdam

According to preliminary data, Amsterdam will lead the ranking of cities in terms of tourist tax, as the government has decided to raise the tax in 2024 to 12.5% of the cost of a hotel room. The tax will apply not only to tourists who decide to stay in the city, but also to cruise ship passengers.

France, Paris

Starting in January 2024, tourists staying in hotels or other accommodation facilities in the capital of France will have to pay three times more tax than before. Thus, the tourist tax in Paris will reach 11 euros per night.

Italy, Venice

The new taxation program will be launched in the spring of 2024 and will be in force until the end of the same year. It will be a pilot launch after multiple postponements. The tourist tax will be collected from visitors to the city on a daily basis.

Spain, Valencia

In early 2024, the tax will be required to be paid for stays in hotels, campsites, hostels, and apartments in Valencia. The amount of the tourist tax will depend on the type of accommodation chosen and will range from 0.50 to 2 euros per night.

Spain, Barcelona

The tourist tax in Barcelona was first introduced in 2018, but in 2024 the amount of the fee will increase. Thus, in April next year, the fee will be 0.50 euros more than in 2023, namely 3.25 euros per visitor to tourist destinations.

Portugal, Olhão

Two different tourist fees will be introduced in the resort town. Thus, from April to October, 2 euros per night will be charged, and from November to March - 1 euro per night. At the same time, the region provides for exceptions: the tax will not be charged for children under 16 years old and those who pay a maximum of 10 euros during their stay.

Portugal, Faro

A commission of ~1.50 euros per person in the Portuguese city will have to be paid during the season, namely from March to October, but for a maximum of 7 nights. At the same time, children under 12 are exempt from paying the tax.

Portugal, Figueira da Foz

Here, the municipal tourist tax will depend on the number of nights spent in the accommodation facility, as well as the season of the visit. Thus, from October to March, the amount will be 1.50 euros per night, and from April to September - 2 euros per night. At the same time, children under 16, students, the disabled, and those who stay in the city due to natural disasters are exempt from the tax.

United Kingdom

From the beginning of 2024, the UK will introduce an electronic travel authorization (ETA), which provides for obtaining an entry permit, in particular for visitors from the United States, Australia, Canada and Europe. Failure to comply with the new rules will result in fines.

Spain, Madrid

There has been no official confirmation that a new tourist tax will be introduced in 2024, but the government is considering this possibility, as the Spanish capital suffers from an influx of tourists every year.
