Mstislav Chernov`s documentary 20 Days in Mariupol has already become the highest-grossing documentary in Ukraine last year. It raised more than 500 thousand hryvnias during the first weekend of its release alone. 20 Days in Mariupol: awards and nominations for the movie


The film received its first award at the Sundance Film Festival - it was the People's Choice Award. Later, the film won the national feature competition Docudays UA and once again won the Audience Award. And at the Copenhagen International Documentary Film Festival CPH: DOX 2023, 20 Days in Mariupol received the F:ACT nomination. The film's honors also include victories and awards at: Cleveland International Film Festival in the USA, Cinema for Peace 2023, Doc Edge, Sheffield DocFest 2023. 


In addition, the film was recognized as the best film of 2023 dozens of times, Mstyslav Chernov and Yevhen Maloletka won the Giorgi Gongadze Award, and the American news agency Associated Press received a Pulitzer Prize for the work of Ukrainian photojournalists Mstyslav Chernov, Yevhen Maloletka and Vasylisa Stepanenko in Mariupol.


On January 23, after the announcement of the Oscar nominees, it became known that the film 20 Days in Mariupol would compete for the statuette in the Best Documentary category. It is worth noting that 167 films were allowed to participate in the nomination, and only 15 were shortlisted. 


 It is also worth noting that on February 28, the winners of the BAFTAs, the British equivalent of the Oscars, will be announced, where 20 Days in Mariupol is nominated in two categories: "Documentary and Foreign Language Film.

Facts about 20 Days in Mariupol that you might not know


– Mstislav Chernov, Yevhen Malolietka and Vasilisa Stepanenko were the only international journalists who stayed in the besieged city and documented everything that was happening there;

– Mstislav Chernov`s film is the only Ukrainian film to be included in two Oscar shortlists at once;

– The box office of the film 20 Days in Mariupol is over UAH 2 million, and more than 16 thousand viewers watched it in theaters;

– Serbia banned the screening of the film across the country and called it "anti-russian propaganda";

– The film was published on the YouTube channel Frontline PBS, the US Public Broadcasting Service, and as of January 2024, it has been viewed more than 1.3 million times.
