The German government has made significant changes to the rules for obtaining citizenship. The purpose of such changes is to attract as many legal immigrants as possible to solve the problem of the shortage of skilled workers, the Financial Times reports.

Updated rules for obtaining citizenship in Germany: what has changed

According to the new rules, foreigners who have been legally residing in Germany for five years can now apply for citizenship. Previously, this required eight years of residence in the country.

Also, those who actively integrate, for example, by learning German or doing volunteer work, can apply for citizenship after three years.

The law also abolishes the ban on dual citizenship for non-European Union countries.

Interior Minister Nancy Feyser said that Germany should offer opportunities to qualified people from all over the world, similar to the United States and Canada, and expressed gratitude to those who come to the country and contribute to society.

The Financial Times notes that this decision distinguishes Germany from other European countries, which, on the contrary, are taking measures to complicate the naturalization procedure for immigrants. For example, the French parliament last month passed a law according to which children of immigrants born in France will no longer automatically receive citizenship, but must apply for it at the age of 16-18.

However, along with the simplification of citizenship procedures, Germany has also simplified deportation rules for illegal aliens staying in the country.
