Every day, between 50 and 85 thousand people cross the state border of Ukraine in both directions. The number of people leaving and returning is approximately the same. How many Ukrainians returned to Ukraine, as well as how many foreigners visited Ukraine in 2023, is described in the article below.

How many Ukrainians returned to Ukraine in 2023?

According to official data provided by the State Border Guard Service at the request of Visit Ukraine, the total number of border crossings to enter Ukraine in 2023 exceeded 17.633 million.

So:

– from 01.01.2023 to 01.08.2023 - 8.610 million Ukrainians entered Ukraine;

– from 01.08.2023 to 01.01.2024 - 6.573 million Ukrainians entered Ukraine.

At the same time, according to opendatabot.ua, 99% of Ukrainians who left in 2023 returned to Ukraine. The difference between those who left and those who returned to Ukraine is less than 1%, or 142 thousand people.

For comparison, this is 15 times less than in the first year of the full-scale war. Thus, in 2022, the difference between those who left Ukraine and those who returned was 2.2 million.

And while at the beginning of 2023, Ukrainians were leaving more than returning, the trend reversed in July. Thus, the peak of returns was in August, when 144 thousand more Ukrainians returned than left.

Remember! When planning a trip to Ukraine, first of all, you need to take care of the appropriate insurance policy, because any foreign insurance automatically terminates after crossing the Ukrainian border. In this case, we recommend that you take out insurance specifically covering military risks, which will cover not only standard medical care/treatment/diagnosis, etc. but also accidents and injuries caused by passive or direct military risks.

You can take out such insurance on the Visit Ukraine website. Follow the link and choose an insurance policy with the appropriate coverage and indemnity amount for the required period.

We remind you! The imposed martial law on the territory of Ukraine does not prohibit entry, but it does impose some other restrictions. Read what you need for a safe trip and what nuances you should consider when planning a trip to Ukraine during the war in our previous article.
