Luxembourg government extends temporary protection for Ukrainian refugees: details

The extension of the relevant status will allow refugees to extend their legal stay in the country for another year. Temporary protection grants the right to employment, but limits access to child benefits.

How many refugees from Ukraine have found refuge in Luxembourg?

As you know, more than 4,200 Ukrainians are currently living in Luxembourg under temporary protection. Those who have found a job and are not staying in state shelters can apply for residence status in the country.

However, the LUkraine association estimates that approximately 1,000 refugees who have arrived since the beginning of the war have left Luxembourg. It is not known how many of them returned to Ukraine or went to other countries.

President of the LUkraine Association Nicolas Zharov said: "The situation remains unstable, and the decision to return is a deeply personal one. It depends on security, family ties and the economic situation in Ukraine. Many people often go to Ukraine for a short time, but due to the security situation, they tend to return to Luxembourg."

Some refugees return to Ukraine because of the lack of work or housing. The problem lies in finding housing, as many single-earner refugee families are often rejected by private landlords, said Yuriy Skobel of the Ukrainian House in Strassen.

In addition, in December 2023, the government reported that refugee shelters in Luxembourg are at maximum capacity and most of them cannot accept new residents.
