The Ukrainian government is in favor of international allies taking an active role in the repatriation of Ukrainian refugees. According to Ukrainian officials, it would be more effective to focus efforts on supporting the return of refugees back to Ukraine rather than directly assisting them abroad.

Ukrainians will be encouraged to return home: details

Prime Minister of Ukraine Denys Shmyhal emphasized this idea during a press conference, confirming the position previously expressed by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Officials believe that funds intended to support Ukrainian refugees should be provided directly to the Ukrainian state for further distribution and use within the country. This will allow replacing the current EU refugee assistance programs with programs that will facilitate their return.

The main conditions for the successful return of refugees are security guarantees and financial support.

Remember! When planning a trip to Ukraine, first of all, you need to take care of the appropriate insurance policy, because any foreign insurance automatically terminates after crossing the Ukrainian border. In this case, we recommend that you take out insurance specifically covering military risks, which will cover not only standard medical care/treatment/diagnosis, etc. but also accidents and injuries caused by passive or direct military risks.

You can take out such insurance on the Visit Ukraine website. Follow the link and choose an insurance policy with the appropriate coverage and indemnity amount for the required period.

If Ukrainians feel safe and receive sufficient support at the initial stage of their return, it will significantly increase their motivation to repatriate.

Shmyhal noted that the government is currently working on programs that would encourage Ukrainians to return home, including financial initiatives and other measures to help Ukrainians rebuild their lives in Ukraine.

The reaction of foreign governments to this proposal remains to be seen. On the one hand, European countries need labor resources, but on the other hand, they are also interested in reducing the costs associated with long-term support for refugees. The payment of one-time tranches to facilitate returns could be a beneficial solution for both sides.

We remind you! The majority of Ukrainian refugees who decided to return home came from countries directly bordering Ukraine. In particular, a significant number of returns were recorded from Poland, where almost half of the Ukrainians who emigrated there decided to return home.
