The Netherlands has ended the period of temporary protection for refugees from Ukraine without Ukrainian citizenship, obliging them to leave the country by April 1 or apply for international protection.

Approximately 100 third-country nationals staged a protest in The Hague, expressing dissatisfaction with the deportation decision, nltimes.nl and nos.nl reported.

One category of Ukrainian refugees no longer has the right to protection in the Netherlands: details

Since March 4, 2024, the Netherlands has suspended protection for approximately 2,540 foreigners who were in Ukraine as temporary residents before the war. They need to either apply for asylum or leave the country.

The government allowed these people to stay in local shelters with food for 28 days after March 4, but without the right to work or free medical care.

It is emphasized that by April 1, they must resolve organizational issues, such as resigning from their jobs and closing bank accounts. For those who decide to leave the Netherlands, the government offers financial assistance in the amount of 5000 euros.

At the protests in The Hague, participants expressed dissatisfaction with the discrimination between Ukrainians and non-Ukrainians who were in the country with temporary permits.

In addition, the Dutch courts are considering lawsuits from foreigners challenging the termination of their residence permits, having established special chambers for these cases. Those whose cases are pending in court have been allowed to extend their stay in the shelters for additional time.

Moving to another country is a serious process that requires preparation and knowledge of all the nuances. Legal support will be helpful for this. Use the services of a personal lawyer here.

We remind you! Earlier, the Netherlands announced the closure of the central reception center for Ukrainians, which played a key role in providing assistance and support to refugees. This decision came as a surprise to many, given the ongoing humanitarian crisis and the need for Ukrainians to seek asylum. Find out more about the conditions under which the reception center can be opened here.
