The first introduction of tourist taxes in Portugal began with the support of the Intermunicipal Society of the Algarve (AMAL) back in 2019. According to SchengenVisaInfo, in four years, this decision has been supported by a large number of regions of the country. Thus, as of March 2024, 16 municipalities in the country have agreed to this decision and have begun to introduce an additional tourist tax for overnight stays.

In which cities in the Algarve region do you have to pay a tourist tax now?

It is worth reminding that in Vila Real de Santo Antonio, the tourist tax has been levied since 2016 and amounts to about 1 euro per night. In Faro, since 2020, tourists have been paying an additional €1.5 per night, and in Olhão, since May 2023, €2 per night.

However, now, the introduction of an additional tourist tax is planned in another popular tourist region of Portugal, which is located in the charming Algarve region. Such changes are due to the fact that in recent years the tourist flow to the Algarve has grown significantly and has become an important component of the region's economy. The popularity of this area of the Portuguese coast is due to its attractive beaches, clear sea, luxurious golf courses, and a variety of entertainment options. However, the large flow of tourists also creates problems related to environmental protection and infrastructure.

Thus, on March 14, 2024, tourist taxes began to be collected in the city of Portimao. The fee is EUR 2 per night during the high season (April 1 to October 31) and EUR 1 per night during the low season (November 1 to March 31).

The introduction of an additional tax is also expected in the city of Albufeira. It is noted that the first fees will have to be paid in May 2024. The final amount per night is not yet known, it must be approved by local authorities.

The new rules will apply to all tourists (aged 13 and older) staying overnight in resort locations, hotels, campgrounds, and RV parks.

This initiative is part of a program to raise funds for the development of tourism infrastructure and the preservation of the natural environment in the region. In addition, the proper use of the funds raised can improve the conditions for tourists, help create jobs and help preserve the unique natural and cultural heritage of the region for future generations.

Remember that reliable health insurance is the key to a tourist's confidence and safety while traveling. After all, an insurance policy will not only help you get high-quality medical care, but also save your own money in an unforeseen situation, for example, in case of a flight delay or loss of luggage at the airport.
