The first round of parliamentary elections has been held in France, where voters overwhelmingly supported the far-right National Rally party, led by the scandalous Marine Le Pen. We will tell you who Le Pen is, what her policy is and how it could affect Ukraine.

Elections in France: Le Pen vs Macron

The first round of the French parliamentary elections ended according to previously published forecasts. The far-right won, while the party of incumbent President Emmanuel Macron managed to take only third place.

Thus, the National Rally party gained 34% of the vote. The second place goes to the left-wing New People's Front with 28.1%. President Macron's political force is in third place with 20.3%.

As for the distribution in the parliament, the situation after the first round is as follows:

- The National Rally - between 230 and 280 MPs;

- New People's Front - 125 to 165 MPs;

- Macron's party - from 70 to 100 MPs.

Thus, none of the parties is seeking a majority (289 votes).

It should be noted that the results may change during the second round, when the French will vote for majority candidates. The second round of elections is scheduled for 7 July.

Macron calls to fight Le Pen

After announcing the preliminary results, the French President called on parties to unite against far-right forces in the second round of elections to be held on 7 July next Sunday.

"Faced with the National Rally, the time has come for a broad, clearly democratic and republican alliance for the second round," he said.

Macron also noted the high voter turnout in the first round and said it "shows the importance of this vote for all our compatriots and the desire to clarify the political situation."

Le Pen's politics: what do you need to know about her?

It is important to note that France may become the first major country in the EU to form a government with far-right politicians who are often sceptical or negative about military assistance to Ukraine.

First of all, it should be understood that the National Rally is clearly in opposition to President Emmanuel Macron. That is, the current president's policy on foreign and domestic issues will directly depend on the approval of the far right.

An important statement has already been made by Le Pen: "As for Ukraine, the president will not be able to send troops."

If Le Pen's party manages to come to power, France will see major changes in domestic politics and a fierce confrontation between the new government and the powerful left-wing New People's Front.

What does the victory of the far right mean for Ukraine?

It should be said that the victory of the National Rally could lead to uncertainty about France's position in the russian-Ukrainian war.

According to media reports, Marine Le Pen has a history of pro-russian sentiment. But now the party says it will help Ukraine defend itself from russian invaders.

Although the French president has a number of foreign policy powers, Le Pen hinted that since the National Rally government will control the treasury, there will be no money for some of Macron's foreign policy initiatives, but instead there will be "red lines".

We remind you! The European Union held elections to the European Parliament. The voting ended in sensations and a political crisis for some politicians. Here are the preliminary election results and what to expect now.
