Responsible tourists always buy an insurance policy before embarking on a new trip. However, even the most expensive insurance will not be able to cover absolutely all expenses. Learn more about the cases when travel insurance won't help you
Travel insurance will help travelers protect themselves from unforeseen circumstances and additional medical expenses while traveling. However, no insurance company will be able to offer you a policy that will cover absolutely all the costs of medical care for a tourist. Therefore, it is very important to be aware of the cases in which your travel insurance is powerless.
What does travel insurance cover?
When travelling, travel insurance provides protection against the main risks and covers various incidents.
First of all, it covers medical care - from basic medical consultations to complex surgeries. This includes diagnostic procedures, necessary medicines and hospital stays if necessary.
An important component is emergency evacuation - if necessary, the insurance will cover transportation to the nearest hospital or an ambulance call.
In case of injury (fractures, sprains, etc.), the insurance will also provide the necessary emergency medical care.
Travel insurance also covers the repatriation of the body.
Additionally, depending on the package, the travel policy covers flight delays/cancellations, loss of luggage, obtaining temporary documents in case of their theft or loss, etc.
It is worth noting that all payments are made within the limits set by the contract. The standard amount of insurance coverage ranges from EUR 30,000 to EUR 50,000, which is considered sufficient for most countries.
In what situations can insurance not protect tourists?
Most travel insurance policies cover critical incidents that can happen to travelers: emergency medical expenses, hospitalization, emergency surgery, purchase of medicines, etc. Some insurances even cover the costs of evacuation and repatriation, or even returning the body of a deceased tourist to their home country.
You can protect yourself as much as possible while traveling with advanced insurance programs that also compensate for the loss or theft of belongings, luggage, flight delays, risks during extreme sports, etc.
It is also very important to be aware not only of your rights to compensation, but also of the full list of exclusions from the insurance policy. We have prepared for you the TOP 5 most common situations in which travel insurance does not reimburse travelers' expenses.
Chronic diseases
The insurance company will not reimburse your expenses for the treatment of chronic diseases and other health problems that arose even before you bought the policy. Therefore, if you have heart, bronchopulmonary, oncological or any other diseases while traveling abroad, you will have to cover significant financial expenses on your own.
Plastic surgery
Travel insurance provides compensation only for emergency medical services: injuries, wounds, and other sudden and unpredictable conditions. Of course, cosmetic surgeries without medical indications are not covered by this insurance.
Health improvement and prevention
If a tourist wants to relax in a sanatorium, undergo a preventive examination, or take a course of vitamins, the insurance company will not reimburse such medical expenses. Wellness measures are not considered emergency conditions and do not pose any threat to life, so they are not covered by a travel insurance policy.
Treatment due to the use of alcohol, drugs and toxic substances
If a tourist needs treatment due to the use of alcohol, drugs and other prohibited substances, the insurance will not reimburse such medical expenses. Intoxication, overdose and alcohol poisoning are not covered by the insurance.
Services related to pregnancy and childbirth
Any medical services related to a normal pregnancy are not covered by travel insurance. Therefore, the costs of examinations, childbirth and other procedures will not be reimbursed. A possible exception is an urgent intervention to save the life of the mother.
