Car insurance in the Czech Republic: do Ukrainians need to take out a local policy?
Ukrainians who live in the Czech Republic and drive their own cars should know everything about the rules that apply to drivers. Find out more about compulsory car insurance in the Czech Republic and whether Ukrainians need to take out a local insurance policy
All vehicles in the Czech Republic are subject to compulsory motor insurance called Povinné ručení. This is an analogue of the Ukrainian car insurance. Read more about car insurance in the Czech Republic, what determines its cost and whether Ukrainians need to take out Czech CTPCI in this article.
Compulsory car insurance in the Czech Republic: what drivers need to know
Povinné ručení insurance is mandatory for all vehicles with Czech licence plates. The policy works in the same way as a car citizen, which is familiar to Ukrainians, and covers losses to victims in the event of an accident provoked by the driver of the insured car.
The cost of car insurance in the Czech Republic
The price of compulsory motor TPL insurance is not fixed and may vary depending on the following factors:
● type of vehicle;
● year of manufacture;
● engine size;
● car model;
● area of operation;
● number of road traffic accidents and insurance claims in the past;
● age and experience of the driver;
● place of registration of the car;
● insurance coverage terms and conditions.
Due to the large number of nuances that are taken into account when setting the price, it is almost impossible to calculate the approximate cost of a policy. However, in 2024, the average price of Povinné ručení insurance was around CZK 3,890-4,371.
Drivers of vehicles with Czech registration will face a fine for not having a Povinné ručení policy. Depending on the conditions, the amount of the fine can range from CZK 10,000 to CZK 50,000.

Car insurance in the Czech Republic for Ukrainians: do I need to take out a Czech CTPCI policy?
Povinné ručení is mandatory for Ukrainians who have re-registered their car and received Czech licence plates or purchased a new car in the Czech Republic.
Driving legally in the Czech Republic with vehicles with Ukrainian licence plates does not require a Czech motor third party liability insurance policy. However, it is mandatory to have a Green Card insurance policy.
The Green Card is an international insurance policy for motorists. If you have travelled from Ukraine in your own car, you know that this policy is mandatory for crossing the border. However, it is also valid in Poland. The main thing is to keep track of the policy's validity period and renew it in time.
The insurance company compensates for damage that may be caused abroad by a car with a Green Card policy. It's important to remember that damage caused to third parties is covered, but the coverage does not apply to the person responsible for the accident. This means that if you hit someone else's car abroad, the insurance company will pay money to the other party to the accident, not you.
If you have a valid Green Card insurance policy, you do not need to take out additional Polish insurance. Remember that the Green Card is valid not only in Poland and Ukraine, but also in Europe, North Africa and the Middle East, so you will be under reliable insurance protection even when travelling to other countries.
How to buy a Green Card online?
You can buy a Green Card both abroad and in Ukraine. However, insurance abroad will cost much more.
Therefore, it is better to buy insurance online, because it is quick and easy. On the Visit Ukraine portal, you can take out a Green Card policy from a licensed insurer. The calculator allows you to calculate the exact price of the policy individually for your vehicle. Packages are available for different periods from 15 days to 1 year for cars and trucks, trailers and semi-trailers for trucks, as well as motorcycles and scooters.
Remember. You can enter the Czech Republic by your own car only if you have a driver's licence and a technical passport. However, due to various circumstances, Ukrainians may need a document recovery service. You can find out how to restore a lost driving licence and technical passport in the Czech Republic here.
