All drivers in Germany have compulsory car insurance called KFZ-Haftpflichtversicherung. This insurance is identical to the usual Ukrainian car insurance. The article below explains whether Ukrainians need to take out German insurance and whether there are other options.

Car insurance in Germany: types of policies

KFZ-Haftpflichtversicherung: an analogue of compulsory motor third party liability insurance in Germany

KFZ-Haftpflichtversicherung insurance is similar to Ukrainian motor third party liability insurance and is mandatory for all vehicles with German registration. The policy covers damages to the victim in the event of an accident in the country.

Teilkasko: analogue of Mini Hull Insurance in Germany

Teilkasko is a voluntary car insurance similar to the Ukrainian Mini Kasko, which covers additional risks, such as damage to the car in the event of a natural disaster, collision with animals, theft, etc.

Vollkasko: an analogue of hull insurance in Germany

Vollkasko is also a voluntary policy, an analogue of the Casco that is familiar to Ukrainians. It is a policy that covers the most risks and provides full indemnity.

What determines the cost of insurance in Germany?

It is almost impossible to find out the exact price of car insurance in Germany without additional calculations. The cost of a policy depends on the following factors:

● the amount of coverage;
● region of registration;
● car make and model;
● driver's length of service and profession;
● engine size;
● mileage and year of manufacture of the car;
● driver's age;
● deductible amount, etc.

Obtaining compulsory car insurance in Germany is quite simple:

● apply to the insurance company for car insurance online or in person;

● prepare a package of documents;

● sign a contract and make a payment;

● receive an eVB number - an electronic confirmation of the insurance policy.

What documents are required to obtain compulsory car insurance in Germany?

● Driving licence;

Car insurance for Ukrainians in Germany: do I need to take out a local policy?

Ukrainians who have been living in Germany for more than 1 year have until 30 September 2024 to re-register their car and obtain German licence plates. For cars that have already completed the re-registration procedure and received German number plates, KFZ-Haftpflichtversicherung car insurance is mandatory.

For more information on re-registering a Ukrainian car in Germany, please follow the link.

However, do drivers who still drive cars with Ukrainian licence plates need to take out German motor third party liability insurance?

No, not if you have a valid Green Card insurance policy.

The Green Card is an international insurance policy for motorists. If you have travelled from Ukraine in your own car, you know that this policy is mandatory for crossing the border. However, it is also valid in Germany. The main thing is to keep track of the policy's validity period and renew it in time.

The insurance company will compensate for any damage that may be caused abroad by a car with a Green Card policy. It's important to remember that damage caused to third parties is covered, but the coverage does not apply to the person responsible for the accident.

If you have a valid Green Card insurance policy, you do not need to take out additional German insurance. Remember that the Green Card is valid not only in Germany and Ukraine, but also in Europe, North Africa and the Middle East, so you will be under reliable insurance protection even when travelling to other countries.

How do I apply for a Green Card?

It is better to buy insurance online because it is quick and easy. On the Visit Ukraine portal, you can take out a Green Card policy from a licensed insurer. Packages are available for different periods from 15 days to 1 year for cars and trucks, trailers and semi-trailers for trucks, as well as motorcycles and scooters.

Please note! For those Ukrainians who have travelled abroad in their own cars due to the war, it is advisable to research the laws and regulations of the country in which they are currently staying. You can find out which countries have mandatory vehicle registration and whether you need to undergo a technical inspection here.
