Ukrainians living in Canada have been given the opportunity to extend their work and study permits or obtain new ones without leaving the country. This became possible due to new measures introduced by the Canadian government for Ukrainian citizens who arrived in the country before March 31, 2024.

Read this article to find out what types of visas are available to Ukrainians and what steps they need to take to enter the country in 2024.

New opportunities for Ukrainians in Canada: how to get a work and study permit

From now on, Ukrainians who arrived in Canada on a CUAET visa before March 31, 2024, can apply for a new open work permit, an extension of their current work permit, or a new study permit. As noted on the website of the Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), such applications cannot usually be filed from Canada, but an exception has been made for Ukrainians.

In addition to new work and study opportunities, Ukrainians who arrive under the CUAET program will be able to take advantage of free settlement services until March 31, 2025. This is an additional measure to help Ukrainians adapt to Canada and facilitate their integration into the local community.

Who is eligible for the permits?

To be eligible for an open work or study permit, you must meet two main requirements:

1. Arrive in Canada by March 31, 2024 on a CUAET visa.

2. Stay in Canada with a valid temporary resident status.

Those who meet these criteria can apply until March 31, 2025. A work permit will require a fee of C$100, and a study permit will require a fee of C$150.

The measures reflect Canada's support for Ukrainians who have been forced to leave their country due to the hostilities. Thanks to these changes, Ukrainians will be able to continue their lives and work in Canada without hindrance, receiving the necessary assistance and support.

We remind you! Since the beginning of the full-scale invasion, more than 250 Ukrainian refugees have left for Canada. Read what jobs are available in Canada and what salaries Ukrainians can expect in our previous article.
