If you have ever worked or are currently living and working in Europe, you may have heard of tax refunds. This is an opportunity to get back some of the money you have overpaid in taxes. For Ukrainians who have moved abroad or temporarily worked in Europe, this can be an important financial resource. We will explain what a tax refund is, how to get it, and which countries offer this opportunity in the article below.

What is a tax refund?

A tax refund is a refund of money paid in excess of the tax rate to the government of the host country. This often happens when employers withhold too much money from your salary. The tax rules vary from country to country, but in most cases, employers pay taxes in advance by making monthly advance payments.

When can Ukrainians receive a tax refund?

To find out if you are eligible for a tax refund, you need to file a tax return in the country where you worked. This will allow you to declare all your income and determine whether you have an overpayment. It is important to know that even if you have already returned to Ukraine, you can still file a tax return and claim a refund.

How much can I get back?

According to statistics, approximately 90% of employers pay more taxes than the employee actually owes. The average refund amount in 2024 in different countries is as follows:

– Germany - 1072 euros

– Netherlands - 975 euros

– United Kingdom - 1017 pounds

– Ireland - 1096 euros

– Austria - 904 euros

– Norway - 5822 kroner

After filing a declaration, you can also receive additional financial benefits from the government, in particular

– Germany - up to 250 euros for each child;

– Netherlands - 270 euros for young children and up to 385 euros for older children;

– Norway - 970 kroner per month.

How do I get a tax refund?

As we have already mentioned, in order to receive a refund, you must first file an income tax return. You can file the return yourself, but if you are not confident in your knowledge of the local language and legislation, it is recommended to contact tax experts. One of the most well-known companies in this area is RT TAX. Founded in 2000, the company has more than 400 offices in 40 countries and has already helped more than 250,000 employees from all over the world to receive their tax refunds.

The main advantage of RT TAX is that you pay for their services only if you get a successful refund - no upfront fees. This means that you do not need to pay anything upfront.

We remind you! According to the Tax Code, Ukrainians who are abroad and have income but have permanent residence in Ukraine are residents of Ukraine. This means that they must file a tax return.
