A sufficient number of Ukrainians have travelled to Germany in their own cars, where they were obliged to register their cars locally and obtain German number plates. This raises the question: what if the driver of this car decides to return to Ukraine?

The Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine reminded that for a long time, the German authorities allowed the use of vehicles with Ukrainian licence plates without the need to register them in Germany.

However, as of 30 September, vehicles with Ukrainian registration that have been in Germany for more than a year must be registered locally, i.e., have German licence plates.

Do I need to re-register after arriving in Ukraine?

Owners of vehicles with Ukrainian registration who have registered them with the relevant German authorities and have not deregistered them at the service centres of the Ministry of Internal Affairs after travelling abroad may obtain new Ukrainian registration certificates and number plates.

Upon returning the vehicle to Ukraine, its owners or their authorised representatives must apply to any service centre of the Ministry of Internal Affairs to obtain a new registration certificate and number plates, pay for re-registration, reimbursement of the cost of registration documents and number plates.

Also, do not forget that upon returning to Ukraine, it is mandatory to take out a motor third party liability insurance policy. This insurance policy allows you to compensate the injured party in the event of an accident. If you do not have insurance, you will face a fine. Therefore, order an MTPL policy on the Visit Ukraine portal. We have the opportunity to conclude a contract with a deductible of UAH 0.00.

We remind you! Mini CASCO can be a great option for insuring your car against natural disasters, especially in the current climate realities. We tell you what risks the insurance covers, the amount of coverage and where to take out such a policy here.
