The European Union is working to simplify rail travel across the borders of its member states. By the end of 2025, it is planned to introduce a single ticket system that will allow passengers to travel across different European countries using only one document. The initiative aims to make cross-border travel more convenient and affordable for travelers.

What will change?

Today, traveling by rail in Europe can be a challenge due to the need to book tickets on different platforms and with different providers. This often creates confusion with timetables and increases costs, as passengers are forced to buy tickets for each leg of the route separately.

The new approach will allow:

• Book one ticket for the entire route, regardless of the number of connections.

• Unify the booking system, making it simple and straightforward, similar to modern airline ticketing.

• Expand multimodal travel by integrating rail and air travel.

Timeline for implementation

The EU Commissioner for Transport, Apostolos Tsitsikostas, said that the new system should be operational by the end of 2025. This will be an important step in the realization of a single European transportation network. It is also planned to improve the rights of passengers, which will avoid additional costs due to flight cancellations or delays.

What does this mean for tourists?

The innovation is especially useful for travelers on a tight budget or those who want to avoid unexpected expenses. Traveling will become not only easier but also more profitable. In addition, the popularity of environmentally friendly modes of transportation, such as railways, will increase, as the single ticket system will make it easier to choose trains.
