As we reported earlier, Germany has tightened border controls. The federal police are currently checking immigrants from all countries, which has led to catastrophic delays and kilometre-long queues. As of 23 January 2025, according to InPoland, the most difficult situation was at the Frankfurt am Oder (A12) border crossing point, where the queue lasted several hours. Why did Germany introduce strict border controls?


The German government cites two main reasons for tightening border controls:

1. The need to reduce the flow of illegal migration.

2. The need to prevent an epidemic of foot-and-mouth disease (the virus was first detected in the country in 37 years 70 km from the border with Poland in the federal state of Brandenburg).

At the end of December 2024, German Minister of the Interior Nancy Faser announced that the reinforced border posts would be in place at least until the end of March, with the possibility of extension.

- Ukrainian ID card;

- birth certificate - for children under the age of 16 travelling with their parents;

- Green Card insurance policy (for drivers travelling by car).


How is control carried out when crossing the German border?


1. Border guards and veterinary officers work around the clock at the leading checkpoints.

2. Migrant control on the border with Poland has been in place since 2023.

3. Since September 2024, checkpoints on the borders with Denmark, France, Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg have been strengthened.
