What is a Green Card?

The Green Card is an international insurance policy that all drivers traveling outside Ukraine by car are required to have. This document is valid in 44 countries in Europe, Asia and Africa, providing financial protection in the event of an accident. If a driver insured under the Green Card program causes an accident abroad, the policy guarantees compensation to the victims by the laws of the country where the accident occurred.

Interestingly, historically, the Green Card did indeed have a corresponding color, as it was printed on green forms. Today, it can be issued on paper of any shade or even in electronic form, but its name has remained unchanged.

What is the principle of the Green Card?

The Green Card not only provides compensation to victims, but also complies with international law, facilitating border crossing. Using this document confirms that your vehicle has compulsory insurance coverage, which is a key requirement in many countries.

The Green Card is valid in 47 countries that are members of the Green Card System. It was created by the UN Geneva Recommendations and covers almost all European countries, as well as Iran, Israel, Morocco, and Tunisia. Each country has its insurance bureau that regulates the terms and conditions of the policy. In the event of an accident, the insurance company pays compensation to the victims by the laws of the country where the accident occurred. The driver does not bear any additional financial responsibility.

When applying for a Green Policy, you will need:

- Driver's license or passport;

- Identification code;

- Documents of residence;

- Car registration certificate.

The document contains key information about the vehicle, the insurance company, and the policy term. It is worth noting that the top of the document contains a list of countries where it is valid. If any country is crossed out or not listed, you will need to take out border insurance to visit it.

Where to buy a Green Card?

Obtaining a Green Card in Ukraine is the most optimal option from a financial point of view. The cost of an annual policy here ranges from 250 to 400 euros, while in EU countries, such as Germany, the price can reach 900 euros. Therefore, a pre-arranged insurance policy allows you to save a lot of money.

One of the main advantages of the Green Card is its versatility: the policy is valid in all European countries, which allows you to travel without additional insurance costs.

Starting in 2025, Ukrainian insurance companies will be able to set their own prices for motor third party liability policies. This will allow drivers to choose the most favorable offers.

The Green Card can be extended online, even while abroad. However, it is important to remember that the insurance becomes effective only the day after the policy is issued and entered into the centralized database. Without registration in the database, the policy is considered invalid, and it will be impossible to cross the border with such a document.

How much does a Green Card cost in 2025?

From January 1, 2025, the cost of the Green Card is no longer fixed. Previously, prices were controlled by the state and the MTIBU, but now insurance companies independently determine tariffs, taking into account market conditions and their own risk assessment.

This change was made possible by the adoption of the law on insurance market liberalization. The main advantage of this approach is that drivers can choose the most favorable insurance terms. However, due to competition and changes in tariff policy, Green Card prices may increase.

The final cost is influenced by several factors:

1. Type of vehicle - cars, trucks, motorcycles, and trailers have different rates;

2. Policy validity period - insurance can be issued from 15 days to a year;

3. Insurance company - tariffs are now determined individually.

In addition, starting in 2025, the Green Card will not be valid immediately after issuance, but only from the next day. Therefore, it is important to plan your insurance in advance.
