The Czech Republic may reduce aid to refugees from Ukraine: what you need to know
The Czech Republic is preparing to revise its social support rules for Ukrainian refugees, and the changes could take effect as early as 2026. The authorities are discussing new approaches to payments, verification of actual residence, and conditions for maintaining assistance for different categories of people. Find out who may be affected by the restrictions, what payments are currently in effect, and what to prepare for in the future
The Czech Republic is discussing possible changes to social support rules for Ukrainian refugees starting in 2026. This does not mean the abolition of temporary protection, but the authorities want to review the approach to payments and benefits — primarily for those who frequently or for long periods leave the country, including to Ukraine.
Why is the Czech Republic talking about revising assistance?
The key idea is to link social support to actual residence in the country. The Czech government believes that assistance should be provided to those who actually live in the Czech Republic, work, study or integrate, and not just formally retain temporary protection status.
What is the current status of temporary protection?
Temporary protection status for Ukrainians in the Czech Republic is valid until 31 March 2026. At the European Union level, its extension until at least March 2027 is already being discussed, so the status itself is not under threat for the time being.
The following persons are entitled to temporary protection and related assistance:
- citizens of Ukraine;
- foreigners who legally resided in Ukraine before the start of the full-scale war;
- members of their families.
What payments are currently in effect
As of today, the basic social payments are as follows:
- adult — 4,860 korunas;
- child — 3,490 korunas;
- child with a disability — up to 5,235 korunas;
- adult with a disability — up to 7,290 korunas.
These amounts may be adjusted depending on the life situation, availability of housing and other factors.
What changes are being discussed
Among the possible innovations being considered by the Czech government, several key points are mentioned. First and foremost is control over leaving the country and verification of actual residence. Social benefits may also be directly linked to actual residence in the Czech Republic.
A separate scenario is being discussed, according to which, after 150 days of residence, benefits may be reduced or terminated if the person is not working and does not belong to a vulnerable category of the population.

Who may not be affected by the changes
Even with the tightening of the rules, support for vulnerable groups is planned to be maintained. These include:
▪️ children under 18 years of age;
▪️ students under 26;
▪️ pregnant women;
▪️ pensioners over 65;
▪️ people with disabilities and their carers.
For these categories, assistance is likely to remain in full.
What temporary protection generally provides
Temporary protection status remains a key support tool. It entitles you to legal residence, work without a separate permit, health insurance, access to education for children, social and humanitarian assistance, temporary housing, language courses and counselling.
Reminder! The path to Czech citizenship begins with legal residence in the country for several years. However, the minimum period may vary significantly depending on your situation. Learn more about current deadlines, naturalisation rules and the steps to obtain a Czech passport.
