Since the beginning of russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, many Ukrainian families have taken refuge in Poland. For children who continue their education in Polish schools, the issue of preserving their native language and culture is important. Polish law provides for the possibility of learning Ukrainian as a second foreign language under certain conditions. This was reported by the Embassy of Ukraine in Poland.

According to Polish educational legislation, students who arrived in the country after February 24, 2022, can study Ukrainian as a foreign language. This is an important step in supporting Ukrainian children, allowing them not to lose contact with the language of their country.

In Polish schools, children are required to learn foreign languages

from grade 1 - one foreign language,

from grade 7, a second foreign language is added.

Thus, Ukrainian can be chosen as a second foreign language from grade 7. At the same time, a student has the right to decide whether to take the eighth grade exam in Polish.

How to introduce the Ukrainian language at school?

In order for the Ukrainian language to become part of the curriculum, parents or representatives of students must initiate this process themselves. To do this, you need to:

1. Submit an application to the school administration with a request to introduce Ukrainian as a second foreign language.

2. Coordinate the issue with the school administration and the relevant educational authorities.

3. Make sure that the necessary resources are available - qualified teachers and teaching materials are required for teaching.

Grade 8 exam in the 2024/2025 school year

Ukrainian citizens studying in Polish schools will take exams in mathematics and a modern foreign language in the 2024/2025 school year. However, there are exceptions: children who continue their studies at a Ukrainian school (remotely) and plan to take the Ukrainian final exam in 2025 may be exempt from taking the Polish exam for grade 8.

The opportunity to study Ukrainian in Polish schools is an important factor in maintaining Ukrainian identity among refugee children. However, to realize this right, it is necessary to take the initiative and actively cooperate with educational institutions. Parents, teachers and the community play a key role in preserving the Ukrainian language and culture abroad.

One of the main challenges for Ukrainian families abroad is adapting their child to the new education system without losing contact with the Ukrainian program. It is important to understand how to combine studying at a local school and distance learning in Ukraine, what rights your child has, and how to legalize documents. A consultation with an educational lawyer will help you find the best solution for you.

We remind you!
Starting in 2027, Ukrainian schoolchildren will be studying under a new reform that includes a number of innovations. We told you what changes the government is preparing for school education.
