Customs regulations
What are the rules for crossing the border with pets for Ukrainians?
Importing pets into Australia can be a complicated process due to the country's strict biosecurity measures. Below are some general guidelines, but please note that these requirements are subject to change, so it is very important to consult with the Australian Department of Agriculture, Water and the Environment (DAWE) or a registered migration agent for the most up-to-date information:
- Microchip. Your pet must be microchipped with an ISO-compliant microchip to ensure proper identification.
- Vaccinations. Dogs should be vaccinated against distemper, hepatitis, parvovirus, parainfluenza, and bordetella (kennel cough). Cats should be vaccinated against feline enteritis and feline influenza (herpesvirus and calicivirus).
- Rabies vaccination. Australia is rabies-free, so pets should be vaccinated against rabies. However, there is currently no rabies vaccine approved for use in Ukraine. Therefore, pets must be transported to a rabies-free country for at least 180 days before entering Australia.
- Blood test. After the 180-day waiting period, your pet must have a blood test to confirm that they have sufficient rabies antibodies. The sample must be tested at an approved laboratory.
- Import permit. Obtain an import permit from DAWE before entering Australia. The permit will contain conditions and requirements specific to your pet.
- Quarantine. All pets entering Australia must be quarantined for a minimum of 10 days in a government-approved quarantine facility. You are responsible for the costs associated with this.
- Documentation. Prepare all the necessary documentation, including health certificates, vaccination records, microchip data, blood test results, and import permits. These documents will be required for customs clearance in Australia.
