To minimize risks and correctly prepare a package of documents in accordance with the purpose of the trip, it is advisable to consult with a lawyer in advance.
Important!
From December 2023, to enter Malaysia, travelers need to fill out a digital MDAC (Malaysia Digital Arrival Card) online. It is recommended to do this 3 days before arrival on the website. The document is filled out in English.
The questionnaire includes full name, passport details, e-mail, place of registration, date of arrival and departure, mode of transport and country of departure. After filling it out, a confirmation is sent to the specified email, which must be saved in PDF format and shown to the border guard at the time of entry.
How much money do you need to cross the border?
Malaysia does not set a minimum amount of funds for entry. If necessary, border guards may ask you to confirm your financial security for the duration of your stay. Tourists are usually advised to have at least USD 50 per day, depending on their travel plans.
Do I need health insurance to travel to Malaysia?
Yes, medical insurance is an important element when traveling to Malaysia.
When entering Malaysia, border guards may check whether your medical insurance is valid for the entire planned stay, not just for the arrival and departure dates. If the policy does not cover the entire trip, this may give rise to additional questions during the check.
At the border at the point of arrival, you must fill out an immigration card, keep it until you leave the country, and pay an entry fee. An important feature is the fact that the form is filled out regardless of whether you are applying for a visa to Malaysia or not.
The immigration card must contain the following information:
- FULL NAME
- Date and place of birth
- Citizenship
- Occupation
- Place of permanent residence
- Passport number and who issued it
How can I extend my stay in Malaysia?
If you are going to stay in the country for more than 30 days, you need to apply for a visa. To do this, you must first collect a certain package of documents and apply to the embassy.
The required documents are
- application form
- valid passport with a validity period of more than 6 months on the date of entry
- 1 photo
- for children (inscribed in the passport) - 1 photo, the visa is issued free of charge
- for children (have their own passport) - 1 photo, visa fee is additionally paid
- a round-trip ticket
Visa processing time can vary from three days to two weeks.
IMPORTANT! If you exceed the visa-free stay in the country, you must obtain an exit permit and pay a fine of 100 MYR. As a rule, the embassy refuses to grant a visa to late pregnant women.
What are the rules for crossing the border with pets for Ukrainians?
Before traveling to Malaysia, it is necessary to check the health status of all pets. To enter Malaysia with a pet, you will need to present a certified health certificate to the customs officers. Dogs and cats will also need a microchip, parasite treatment, and vaccinations.
What to do if your foreign passport is about to expire
As of October 29, 2025, Ukraine has abolished the military rule that allowed foreign passports to be extended and information about children to be added to them.
Now, a valid biometric passport is required to travel abroad.
If your document has been extended or information about children has been added to it, you must apply for a new foreign passport.
Where to obtain a new passport
- In Ukraine: at DMS, CNAA offices, or at branches of DP “Document”.
- Abroad: at embassies or consulates of Ukraine, as well as at branches of DP ‘Document’, if they operate in your country.
If you are abroad and have an “extended” passport
If border guards do not let you leave or enter the country with an “extended” document, contact the nearest Ukrainian embassy or consulate.
There you can apply for an identity card for return to Ukraine (“white passport”). It is issued on the day of application — free of charge for children under 16 and for a consular fee for adults.
