Homes without light and heating are a serious challenge to health and safety. In winter, it is especially important to think in advance about simple, affordable, and safe ways to insulate your home and protect every member of your family. Finance.ua has compiled a list of the cheapest methods of heat conservation that really work, even in freezing temperatures.

Kyiv, Dnipro, Odesa, and other cities in Ukraine found themselves at the epicenter of energy terror due to Russian shelling of critical infrastructure. This led to a lack of light, water, and heating during periods of frost down to –15 °C.

Alexander Kharchenko, director of the Energy Research Center, emphasized that the situation is unprecedented for the capital:

“There has never been a more difficult situation with energy in Kyiv. Never in the world have there been attacks on energy at minus 15 °C on a city with central heating that has been destroyed.”

The cheapest ways to insulate an apartment

1. Sealing windows and doors

The first and most effective step is to block drafts. Rubber or foam sealing strips are suitable for this.

Price: from 29 UAH for 6–9 m

Reduce heat loss by 20–30%

Sealing 4 windows in a typical apartment will cost approximately 200 UAH.

Additionally, you can use thermal film for windows, which creates a “third glass” effect and prevents cold from penetrating inside.

2. Foil screens behind radiators

With even minimal heating or periodic power supply, foil heat screens installed behind radiators work effectively.

reflect heat back into the room;

increase the temperature by 1–2 °C;

price — from 117 UAH per 1 m²;

for 4 radiators — up to 500 UAH.

3. Heat from below: the floor

A significant part of the cold comes from below. A simple solution is rugs, film, or cardboard on the floor.

Cost: from 50 UAH/m²;

They create a heat-insulating barrier;

They add a feeling of comfort even without heating.

4. The sun — a free source of heat

According to the recommendations of the Ministry of Health, in sunny weather, open the curtains during the day to let in the heat, and close them tightly in the evening to keep it inside.

Additional life hacks for keeping warm

Curtains and blankets

Heavy curtains or blankets on windows retain heat twice as effectively as light curtains.

Sealing sockets and pipes

Polyethylene foam or construction foam for gaps around pipes and sockets can save 5-10% of heat.

Clothing and movement

Layered clothing and light physical activity help the body generate heat more efficiently than any heater.

Hot water bottles and “warm zones”

In a cold apartment, hot water bottles in plastic bottles (1.5–2 liters) wrapped in a towel work well. Fill them 2/3 full with boiling water — the heat will last up to 5 hours.

Chemical hand and foot warmers are also available for purchase:

price — from 20 UAH per piece;

activated by air;

provide heat for 6–12 hours without electricity or fire.

Important: do not press them tightly against your body while sleeping.

Electric blankets and mats that can be powered by a power bank have also appeared on the market.

For a systemic effect, create a “heat fortress”:

choose the smallest room without exterior walls;

make a “tent” out of blankets or plaids;

the heat from your body and breathing will raise the temperature inside by 4–7 °C in just an hour.

How to avoid mistakes when insulating?

Insulation is not complete sealing at any cost. Mistakes can lead to mold, moisture, and health hazards.

Important rules:

1. When insulating from the inside, be sure to use a vapor barrier film;

2. Leave an air gap of 10–20 mm between the insulation and the wall.

3. Carefully seal all joints — even small gaps become “cold bridges.”

4. Ventilate the room for 2–3 minutes every 2–4 hours, even in frost.

Strictly prohibited:

Using a gas stove or oven for heating — this poses a deadly risk of carbon monoxide poisoning.

Leaving candles unattended.

Placing heating pads on bare skin — always wrap them in fabric.

Even in the most difficult conditions, you can turn your home into an island of warmth and safety without spending a lot of money. Start with simple solutions, act systematically, and don't neglect safety rules — then the cold will become manageable and your health will remain protected.
