Border Queues Before Easter 2026: When to Travel and How to Avoid Delays
Crossing the Ukrainian border before Easter is accompanied by queues and congestion. Find out the rules for leaving Ukraine, requirements for returning to Ukraine in 2026, a list of travel documents and get tips on how to avoid delays
Before Easter, the flow of travelers traditionally increases - Ukrainians return home to their families en masse or plan trips abroad for the holiday weekend. During this period, queues at the border increase significantly, and the load on checkpoints reaches peak values, especially on popular destinations.
To avoid delays and unpleasant surprises on the road, it is important to know the current rules in advance and plan your route correctly. This article contains clear recommendations for both those who are interested in returning to Ukraine in 2026 and those who are planning a trip abroad and want to understand the rules for leaving Ukraine before the holidays.
How to return to Ukraine for Easter: what you need to know?
Citizens of Ukraine can freely enter the territory of our state on the basis of any document confirming their identity:
- Passport of a citizen of Ukraine for traveling abroad;
- Diplomatic passport of Ukraine;
- Service passport of Ukraine;
- Seaman's ID card;
- Crew member's ID card;
- ID card for returning to Ukraine (for Ukrainians who left the country on the basis of an internal passport, you can get it at a diplomatic mission in the country of residence).
Tip: If you are in the EU with temporary protection status, it is important to consider the rules of the country where you live. In most cases, short trips to Ukraine are allowed without losing your status, but the period of absence may be limited (usually from 30 to 90 days, depending on the country), and a long trip may affect social benefits. In addition, sometimes you need to notify local authorities about your trip. Therefore, before traveling, check the current rules in your country of residence to avoid problems when re-entering the EU.
Are there any restrictions on entry to Ukraine?
In 2026, there are no restrictions on entry to Ukraine, both for Ukrainians and foreigners. However, the decision to cross the border is made individually by the border guard service.
Entry may be denied to persons who pose a threat to national security, have violated the rules of stay in Ukraine, or have attempted to cross the border with forged documents. Violation of the law during previous visits or illegal visit to temporarily occupied territories may also be grounds for refusal.
Find out what are the reasons for banning entry to Ukraine and how to appeal the decision in our previous material.
Customs rules in Ukraine
In addition to a package of documents, when crossing the border of Ukraine, travelers must adhere to established customs rules. In particular, individuals can transport across the border of Ukraine without a written declaration to the customs authority:

Usually, during the crossing, border guards check documents, the purpose of the trip, and may also conduct an in-depth search and interviews.

Who can leave Ukraine before Easter?
In addition to entering Ukraine, the rules for leaving Ukraine remain relevant before the holidays, and they are valid in 2026. In particular, crossing the border is allowed for:
- Women, except for those who are on military registration and serve under contract in the Armed Forces of Ukraine, the State Border Guard Service, the National Guard or other law enforcement agencies.

- Children.
- Men who have legal grounds for leaving (including parents with many children, persons with disabilities, accompanying persons, military conscripts with appropriate permits, etc.).

What documents are needed to cross the border and leave Ukraine?
To successfully cross the border in 2026, you must have a number of documents with you. The main list includes:
- A biometric passport valid for at least 3–6 months after the date of return.
- For men, documents confirming the reason for departure (birth certificates of children, medical certificates, court decisions, certificates from the place of study, etc.) and a military registration document.
Important! Employees who have a reservation can travel abroad on a business trip or during vacation, provided that they do not hold certain positions in government bodies.

- A travel insurance policy that covers medical expenses (in some countries this is a mandatory requirement at the border). Details on the requirements for visa-free travel insurance policies can be found in this article.

- Proof of financial capacity: cash, bank card, bank statement or bank certificate (depending on the country's requirements).
- Return ticket: to confirm that the tourist plans to leave the country within the allowed period.
- Confirmation of accommodation: hotel/apartment reservation or official invitation from the host party (individual or legal entity).
EU border checks in 2026: what has changed?
Since October 2025, an additional biometric registration system has been in place at border crossings with EU countries. When crossing the border, border guards take photos of travelers, take fingerprints and scan their passports. This may slightly increase the time it takes to pass the check.
In addition, the services have access to databases of court decisions. If a person is banned from leaving, it will be impossible to cross the border even if all other documents are in place.

What documents are needed to travel abroad from Ukraine by car?
To cross the border in your own or rented car, the driver and passengers need to prepare a standard package of documents, as well as documents for the car:
- Driver's license (in most countries, a Ukrainian one is enough; for some countries, an international driver's license may be required);
- Vehicle registration certificate (vehicle registration certificate);
- Document confirming the right to use the car if the driver is not the owner (notarized power of attorney or rental agreement);
- Customs documents - in case of traveling by car imported under the temporary import regime;
- International insurance policy "Green Card" (mandatory for traveling abroad).
To ensure your trip is safe and without delays at the border, take out international car insurance “Green Card”. It covers liability to third parties in the event of an accident abroad and is recognized in most European countries.

Queues at the border before Easter: when to go?
The period before Easter is one of the most stressful for crossing the border. At this time, queues at the border can increase significantly both for departure and entry into Ukraine.
The greatest load on checkpoints is traditionally observed 3-5 days before Easter, as well as immediately before the holiday weekend.
The busiest checkpoints remain:
- Poland - “Krakivets”, “Shehyni”.
- Hungary – “Chop (Tisa)”.
- Slovakia – “Uzhgorod”.
Less busy (alternative) points:
- Poland – “Nyžankovychi”, “Smilnytsia”, “Hrushiv”.
- Hungary – “Luzhanka”.
- Slovakia – “Maly Berezny”.
In addition, to simplify entry, we recommend checking the queues at the border before your trip. To obtain reliable data, you should use official sources:
- The website of the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine – publishes operational data on the number of vehicles at the main checkpoints, updated several times a day.
- Interactive map of checkpoints – a convenient Google map with markings of crossing points and detailed information.
For more details on how to check the queues at the Ukrainian border, read this article.
How to cross the border faster: practical tips
To make crossing the Ukrainian border before Easter as quick and comfortable as possible, it is worth thinking through the route in advance and taking into account a few practical points.
- Choose less popular checkpoints. Large checkpoints are usually overloaded, while alternative ones can significantly reduce waiting times.
- Plan your trip at night or on weekdays. At this time, the flow of traffic is much less than on weekends or in the evening.
- Check the situation online. Before leaving, be sure to check the current queues at the border via official sources or interactive maps.
- Choose convenient transport. During the holidays, it is important not only to cross the border quickly, but also to get to your destination comfortably. In particular, you should pay attention to private transfers - they allow you to avoid transfers, independent route planning and unnecessary waiting.
This format of the trip has several advantages: the driver picks you up at a convenient place and delivers you directly to the desired address, the route is built taking into account the situation at the border, and the trip itself takes place in comfortable conditions. In addition, trips are available both to Ukraine and from Ukraine to EU countries. This is especially convenient for families with children, group trips or trips in the evening and at night.
To save time and avoid unnecessary stress when crossing the border of Ukraine before Easter, it is worth booking a transfer in advance through the Visit Ukraine service - this will help make the trip as simple and predictable as possible.
What to consider if you are traveling with children?

If the validity of the document has expired, contact the diplomatic mission of Ukraine to extend it for another 5 years.
To return home with a child born in the EU, you will need:
- An identity document;

Children under 16 years of age can travel abroad accompanied by:

5. Any other accompanying person, if he has a written statement from one of the parents, certified by the guardianship and trusteeship authority.
The list of documents depends on the degree of kinship with the person accompanying the child:
1. One of the parents or guardians: it is enough to have a birth certificate or passport of a citizen of Ukraine for children over 14 years old. Notarized consent of the other parent is not required.

To issue a notarized consent, the original passports of both parents, their RNOKPP, as well as the child's birth certificate are required.
