Every year, the Podillia region attracts thousands of travelers with its picturesque canyons, medieval fortresses, and unique natural sites. Bakota and Kamianets-Podilskyi remain among the most popular destinations for short weekend getaways from various cities across Ukraine. These places successfully combine historical heritage and natural beauty, making them suitable for both active recreation and a leisurely exploration of the region.

What tours are available to Bakota and Kamianets-Podilskyi, what’s included in the itinerary, and how many days you should set aside for the trip—we’ll cover all that below.

What to see in Kamianets-Podilskyi and Bakota?

Kamianets-Podilskyi is one of the oldest cities in Ukraine, known primarily for its fortress and Old Town. During the tour, travelers walk along the defensive walls, explore medieval gates, and admire architectural landmarks preserved from various historical eras. The fortress, situated on a rocky promontory above the Smotrych River, is the city’s main landmark and a must-see on every tour in this region. A walk through the Old Town allows you to experience the atmosphere of medieval Podillia, and numerous cafes and bistros offer a place to stop for lunch between excursions.

Bakota is a flooded site in the Dniester Canyon that attracts visitors with both its nature and history. The remains of a rock monastery have been preserved here, and the observation deck offers panoramic views of the canyon’s turquoise waters and the surrounding cliffs. In the summer, you can swim, go stand-up paddleboarding, or take a boat or small ship ride in Bakota, and in the evening, watch the sunset over the canyon. This location is equally well-suited for both active and relaxing getaways.

Weekend tours to Bakota and Kamianets-Podilskyi

For those who want to see the highlights in two days, there are several options with a compact but packed itinerary.

The “Kamianets-Podilskyi Cruise + Bakota” tour is designed as a two-day trip departing from Lviv or Ternopil. On the first day, participants visit the Khotyn Fortress, take in the panoramic views of Bakota and the rock monastery, and in the evening check into a hotel in Kamianets-Podilskyi. The second day begins with a tour of the city and the fortress and ends with a boat cruise through the Dniester Canyon—one of the most memorable highlights of the itinerary.

The “Bakota” tour departs from Lutsk and also lasts two days. The first day is entirely devoted to relaxing in the bay: swimming, stand-up paddleboarding, boat rides, a trip to the observation deck, and an outdoor dinner. On the second day, the itinerary moves to Kamianets-Podilskyi, where a city tour and a visit to the castle are scheduled, followed by free time for a stroll and photos.

Both options allow you to cover the region’s key locations in a short time and are suitable for a weekend trip.

A multi-day trip through Podillia: Chernivtsi, Khotyn, and the caves

For those willing to set aside more time and wanting to see more than just Bakota and Kamianets, extended itineraries are worth considering.

The “Bakota, Kamianets-Podilskyi, Chernivtsi” tour lasts three days and covers several iconic cities. The trip begins in Chernivtsi—participants take a city tour and visit Chernivtsi University, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The route then continues to Kamianets-Podilskyi for a comprehensive tour of the Old Town and the fortress, as well as to Bakota to see the rock monastery. The tour concludes with a cruise through the Dniester Canyon, a tour of the Khotyn Fortress, and a visit to the Verteba Cave in the village of Bilche-Zolote. This option is ideal for those seeking the most comprehensive itinerary in a single trip.

The “Cave Tour | Bakota Bay | Kamianets-Podilskyi” tour lasts two days, departing from Lutsk, Rivne, Lviv, or Ternopil. Its highlight is a visit to the Crystal Cave, which participants explore on the first day. After the cave, the route leads to Bakota Bay with its rock monastery and observation deck, and those who wish can take a boat ride. The second day is dedicated to Kamianets-Podilskyi with a sightseeing tour of the city and the castle.

The “Relaxing Tour of Podillia” also lasts two days and starts in Lutsk, with the option to join the tour en route in Dubno and Kremenets. This option includes a tour of Ternopil with a boat ride, followed by a visit to the fortress and the Old Town of Kamianets-Podilskyi. On the second day, participants head to the rock monastery and Bakota, where, weather permitting, you can go for a swim, and the tour concludes with a tour of the Khotyn Fortress—the very same one where “D’Artagnan and the Three Musketeers” and “Taras Bulba” were filmed.
