Ukraine in 2026 remains open to foreigners, but the entry rules have their own peculiarities. Formally, many procedures remain familiar from the pre-war period, but in practice, control has become more attentive, and the requirements have become clearer. Therefore, before traveling, it is important to understand not only the basic rules, but also the nuances that may affect the border guard's decision.

In this material, we analyze everything you need to know: from visas and documents to the real experience of crossing the border.

Do you need a visa to Ukraine in 2026?

Ukraine uses three entry regimes:

Visa-free entry

Citizens of more than 60 countries of the world do not need a visa for short-term trips to Ukraine. In particular, the visa-free regime applies to representatives of the EU, USA, Great Britain, Canada, Japan, Australia, etc.

A full list of countries whose citizens can enter Ukraine without a visa can be found on the website of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Citizens of these countries can stay in Ukraine for up to 90 days within a 180-day period without a visa. If you plan to stay longer or work, be sure to apply for a visa before traveling.

Electronic visa (e-Visa)

Some countries have an electronic visa - it is issued online.

The rules apply to representatives of Bolivia, India, Indonesia, China, Malaysia, Mexico, Nepal, South Africa, Singapore, Thailand, the Philippines and others. An electronic visa is suitable for tourist trips, business visits, visiting relatives, etc. It usually allows a stay in Ukraine for up to 30 days.

Classic visa

Citizens of some countries in Asia, Africa and the Middle East that are not subject to visa-free travel and electronic visas must apply for a classic visa at the diplomatic mission of Ukraine before traveling.

Also, representatives of any country in the world who plan a long-term stay in Ukraine or want to work, study, etc. must obtain a type D visa before traveling.

We have previously told you more about the available types of visas to Ukraine and the application procedure.

How is the border control in Ukraine?

The border crossing procedure in Ukraine is standard, but can be more detailed than in many European countries.

It usually looks like this:

1. Passport and visa check;

2. Brief questions about the purpose of the trip;

3. If necessary, check additional documents;

4. Sometimes - baggage inspection.

In some cases, they may ask clarifying questions: where exactly are you going, for how long, do you have contacts of the host country. This is normal practice, not a sign of problems.

The 90/180 rule: how does it work?

For citizens of visa-free countries, the standard rule applies: no more than 90 days of stay within any 180 days.

That is, the days are summed up, “zeroing” does not occur automatically after departure, and exceeding the deadline may result in fines or a ban on entry. If you plan to stay longer, you need to apply for a residence permit or a long-term visa.

Here are the most common problems:

1. “I have a visa-free regime, so everything is OK”

No. They may not let you in without confirming the purpose of the trip.

2. No reservation or address of residence

Even basic confirmation solves half of the problems.

3. Incorrect insurance

There is a policy, but it does not cover real risks.

4. Violation of 90/180

One of the most common reasons for refusals during re-entry.

5. Uncertain answers at the border

If a person cannot clearly explain the purpose of the trip, this arouses suspicion.

Security Rules in Ukraine 2026

Do not forget that Ukraine is under martial law, which provides for certain rules of conduct in special places, such as checkpoints. For more information about these rules, please follow the link.

Despite the fact that active hostilities are concentrated in the eastern and southern regions of Ukraine, there are no completely safe cities in Ukraine at the moment due to the threat of missile attacks from the russian federation.

That is why we strongly recommend that foreigners monitor their own safety and do not ignore the air raid alert.

To stay informed about threats from the air, we recommend installing the Air Alert app (from the App Store or Google Play) and be sure to check the map of the nearest shelters in the city of your stay. In case of an air raid alert, go to the nearest shelter immediately!

The rules for entering Ukraine in 2026 remain relatively liberal for most Western countries, but actual control has become stricter. The main thing is not to be limited to basic knowledge about “visa-free”, but to prepare a full package of documents and understand how the rules work in practice.

This approach significantly reduces risks at the border and allows you to avoid unpleasant situations at the very beginning of the trip.

We remind you! The borders of Ukraine remain open to foreign citizens, but it is important to properly prepare for visiting the country. How to plan a trip to Ukraine during the war – read here.
