A nation of heroes and a democratic country: how the world began to characterize Ukraine during the year of full-scale war

After the outbreak of a full-scale war in Ukraine, countries around the world began to recognize and characterize our country in a new way. The brand of Ukraine abroad has grown significantly, and foreign support for our citizens reached an unprecedented level in 2022.
The "Report on the Perception of Ukraine in the World" was prepared by the public organization Brand Ukraine with the expert support of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine. The main facts are described below.
According to the analysis, 2022 was a record year for Ukraine in terms of mentions in international media and social networks. Over the past year, interest in Ukraine was 20 times higher than during the 2012 European Football Championship, which was hosted by Ukraine and Poland.
Ukraine's brand has also grown along with its online popularity. The brand's score increased from 52.8 to 57.9 out of 100 possible points due to the resilience of the Ukrainian people and government.
As for reputational attributes, according to the study, the most popular in 2022 were "Nation of Heroes" and "Democratic Country", which accounted for almost half of the publications in foreign media. The share of the attribute "Ukraine is a member of the European family of nations" was 17%, which is the third most common characterization of Ukraine in the media.
What percentage of attention did the world pay to Ukraine?
The war in our country has become the focus of attention of the global media and their audience. According to analysts, in 7 European countries and the United States, only 4% of the population was unaware of the current situation in Ukraine, while 40% read and discussed it every day.
What percentage of the population followed the situation in Ukraine? Statistics by country:
- Germany - 81%;
- Poland - 72%;
- United Kingdom - 70;
- United States - 69%.
In general, 81% of Europeans were concerned about the spread of the war in Ukraine to other countries and believed that russian aggression affects the lives of people around the world.
Whom does the world support more in the war?
Without a doubt, the civilized world believes that russia is the aggressor in the war. Overall, 71% of the world's population supports Ukraine in the war. The war has contributed to the formation of a positive attitude towards Ukraine, in particular, given its characteristics such as the unity of the population, history, people and culture.
The majority (about 80%) of the population of Europe and North America expressed support for Ukraine. At the same time, the level of support for russia was higher in the Middle East, Africa, Asia, and Latin America, with an average of 25% and 15%.
In addition, the foreign audience in 2022 was very favorable to the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy, paying tribute to his efforts on the way to victory. As of the third quarter of 2022, he was the most popular foreign politician for Americans and No. 2 for British citizens.
The percentage of those who wanted to see Ukraine as a future member of the EU and NATO also broke a historical record. On average, 66% of Europeans were positive about Ukraine's accession to the EU.
Material indicators of Ukraine in 2022
Due to russian aggression, Ukraine suffered record economic losses. A drop in performance was recorded in many material areas. For example, the country's brand value in terms of GDP decreased by 21%, from $107 billion to $85 billion.
