Refugees from Ukraine currently residing in Croatia will be able to travel free of charge in Class II on domestic trains from March 2023. Find out more about what you need to do
Starting March 1, Ukrainians living in Croatia can travel free of charge on domestic trains by presenting their HŽPP smart card. We will tell you what the conditions are and what you need to do to get the card.
It is noted that free travel will be available for citizens of Ukraine only on Class II trains and upon presentation of an HŽPP smart card with the appropriate profile.
Who can get a smart card, and how much does it cost?
Smart cards are issued on the basis of a Ukrainian passport/identity card. To apply for a card, you need to create a profile, which costs €3/22.60 HRK. It will be valid until the end of 2023.

What are Class II trains?
Usually in Europe, train cars are divided into classes of service - Class I and Class II. It is very easy to distinguish between them. In general, all services available on the train are provided for both first and second class passengers.
The main difference is that the first class is a bit more spacious, as there are fewer seats in the carriage than in the second class, and the seats are more comfortable. First-class passengers have a seat reservation included in the ticket price immediately. Also, passengers with first class tickets can exchange them for tickets for another time or direction before the trip at no extra charge.
You can choose the class II train category when buying tickets on the website of Croatian Railways (HŽPP).
As for destinations, Class II trains in Croatia run throughout the country. More information about specific destinations can be found on the HŽPP website when choosing departure and arrival points.
We remind you! Refugees from Ukraine who reside in Croatia and have been granted temporary protection status can apply for a one-time financial assistance from the state. Here you can find out more about the amount of payments and how to apply for assistance.
