Who needs insurance to enter the Czech Republic?

Health insurance is a prerequisite for entering and staying in the Czech Republic for most categories of foreigners, including Ukrainian citizens. The need for it depends on the purpose of the visit and the status of the person.

- Tourists. Citizens of Ukraine entering the Czech Republic for a short period of time under the visa-free regime (up to 90 days within 180 days) are not required to have health insurance for entry. However, it is strongly recommended, as in case of illness or accident, treatment costs can be very high.

- Students. International students coming to study in the Czech Republic are required to have health insurance. For holders of long-term visas or temporary residence permits, insurance covering all necessary medical services is required. The most popular option is private commercial insurance, for example, from PVZP or Maxima, which meets the requirements of Czech law.

- Employed persons. Ukrainians who come to the Czech Republic to work are required to have health insurance. If a person is officially employed, he or she automatically becomes a member of the public health insurance system, and the employer pays the premiums. In this case, medical care is provided at the expense of the state insurance system, and employees are entitled to free treatment in state hospitals.

- Refugees with temporary protection. Citizens of Ukraine who have been granted temporary protection in the Czech Republic due to the war are entitled to public health insurance. It is provided by the state, and registration is carried out automatically after obtaining the relevant status. Refugees can receive free medical care in public healthcare facilities, including initial diagnostics, hospitalisation and prescription medicines.

Do Ukrainians travelling on a visa-free regime need insurance?

Yes, health insurance is mandatory for people travelling to the Czech Republic under the visa-free regime. According to Schengen requirements, travellers must have a health insurance policy that covers a minimum of EUR 30,000 in case of medical care, emergency hospitalisation or repatriation due to illness or death.

Green Card for travelling to the Czech Republic by car

When planning a trip to the Czech Republic by your own vehicle, you need to take care of an international motor third-party liability insurance policy - the Green Card. This document is an international analogue of the Ukrainian CTP and provides insurance coverage for damages that may be caused to third parties as a result of a car accident in the Czech Republic.

The Czech Border Guard carefully checks the validity of the Green Card when crossing the border together with the main documents of the driver and the vehicle. The absence of this insurance policy may result in a ban on entry to the territory of the Czech Republic or a significant fine.

The Green Card insurance policy is not only a legal requirement, but also provides you with the necessary financial protection. In the event of an accident in the Czech Republic without a valid insurance policy, you will have to reimburse all material and medical expenses of the victims on your own, which can reach very significant amounts at European rates.

You can apply for an international insurance policy Green Card for travelling to the Czech Republic online on the Visit Ukraine platform in just a few minutes.

General requirements for insurance policies for short and long term trips to the Czech Republic

Health insurance is an important element for obtaining a visa and safe stay in the Czech Republic, and its requirements depend on the duration and purpose of the trip. For short-term trips lasting up to 90 days, an insurance policy is recommended for visa-free entry, but is required for a Schengen visa. In this case, it must provide a minimum coverage of EUR 30,000, cover emergency medical care, hospitalisation and transportation in the event of illness or death, and be valid in all Schengen countries throughout the entire period of stay.

For long-term trips exceeding 90 days, insurance is a prerequisite for obtaining a category D visa or a temporary or permanent residence permit. The policy must cover all necessary medical services in the Czech Republic. Students and employees are usually required to have private insurance that complies with local legal regulations, while officially employed persons are subject to public health insurance, with premiums paid by their employer. Refugees and persons who have been granted temporary protection in the Czech Republic are entitled to state-funded health insurance.

What kind of insurance is available in the Czech Republic?

There are two main options for health insurance for your stay in the Czech Republic: local Czech insurance and policies issued through Ukrainian insurers, in particular, on the Visit Ukraine portal.

Each of these options has its own peculiarities, advantages and disadvantages.

Local Czech insurance

Local insurance is issued by Czech insurance companies such as PVZP, Maxima, Slavia and others. The main advantage of this type of insurance is its compliance with the requirements of Czech legislation, which is especially important for those who obtain a long-term visa or residence permit. However, it also has its drawbacks: it is limited to the territory of the Czech Republic, so when travelling to other countries, you need to take out additional travel insurance. In addition, the cost of such policies is significantly higher than the alternatives, which can be a financial burden for foreigners.

Insurance through Ukrainian insurers

An alternative is to buy insurance through Ukrainian insurance companies, for example, on the Visit Ukraine portal. Here you can find both travel policies that cover expenses in case of illness or accident during a short-term stay and more extensive medical packages for long-term stays. The main advantages of such insurance are the lower cost compared to Czech policies and the possibility to choose the coverage according to the traveller's needs.

When choosing an insurance policy for a trip to the Czech Republic, it is important to understand the scope of insurance coverage you receive. The Visit Ukraine platform offers a variety of options for both health and travel insurance that fully comply with the standards of the Schengen Agreement and provide reliable financial protection in case of unforeseen circumstances.
